I find it's helpful to park my vehicle with the bumper near an opening of the recycle bin. I step up on that and reach in. Love the idea about the towel over the edge. I got home today and looked at my t-shirt which was dirty basically only in the bosom area - what a sight I was!!!

I was warned that taking anything out of the bins here is a fineable offense.something about identity protection. SO I guess I'm just going to buy my papers (only .75 each) and ask around about left overs. I think my mistake was calling the recycle center to ask first because DH said "I don't think that's legal remember that lady was fined for curb shopping on the fall pickup??"

I thought about DD but when I called my local paper about extra inserts they said that they were required by law to destroy them. So does that mean they are putting them in the recycle bin? The returned papers are actually sent back to a different location so now I at least know where that is. What day do you usually go looking for inserts?

Good question!!

Where I live, we don't have trash/garbage pickup. We have to take our trash to the local 'dump'. We're suppose to seperate it, but I suppose everyone doesn't do this. I really need to check into it and see what they think about me 'stopping by'!!

I still haven't worked up the nerve to DD --
I need to call the local paper again -- last time, they said no but that was a few years ago...

Default If you dumpster dive........

I have a question. What kind of recycling dumpster do you have? B/c there is no way to even look into the ones in this town. There are little slots that the papers get slipped into and that's it. You can't even look inside unless you have the key to the back of the thing. :(

My recycle bins (hee hee, like they are really mine, I kinda wish!!) have 3 sliding plastic things that slide over windows that are probably 2 feet wide by 3 feet tall (guessing) with a horizontal metal bar smack dab in the middle, so there's no way I can crawl into the opening, but I can stick my whole arm in to grab stuff. I'm a little afraid to stick my head in. Can you imagine getting stuck and having to call for help to get out? I'm sure it would make the local newspapers.

I should take a picture because I'm not sure I described it well enough to create a visual..

So, is your dumpster for newspapers only, or paper? So, if you stick your hand in and pull out wads of newspapers, you do this a few times and you'll end up w/ enough inserts to make you happy? I"m trying to figure out how to do this w/o looking like a hobo or spending a ton of time there, flipping through paper LOL

My newspaper recycling bins are the rolling plastic ones with two wheels and a flip top lid. Like the ones the city gives out, but they are from private companies that do apartment buildings. They are small, but they usually only have newspapers.
