Glad you made it through the storm, OP.

I have started canning hamburger meat and boneless skinless chicken. It is easy to do and saves my freezer space for other cuts of meat. At least I know if our power goes out, I will have these canned meats that won't spoil.

I'm glad it worked out for you, whew! In 1999, our basement filled with a few inches of water and we had no electricity for several days, Hurricane Floyd. We lost everything down there, including the freezer. The meat that had been in there smelled so darn bad it ruined the freezer because we couldn't get the smell out & would seep into other things. I'll never forget it.

yes that is important. My Pop told me it was important to get everything out of the freezers, because I wouldn't be able to get rid of stink if anything spoiled..and I sure wasn't buying a brand new $2000 refrigerator/freezer! This had happened to him once at work (he used to be a head chef of a battalion) when they were deployed and the power went out when they were gone..they came back and everything spoiled
and they could not get rid of the smell and and had to throw out all the freezers.

What an ordeal you had to go through. SO many of my neighbors had gotten 5 feet of water in their homes with Floyd...I felt so bad for everyone.
Losing power for close to a week in such cold weather was no picnic, but PALES in comparison to what you and so many others went through with Floyd, Katrina, and so many other events.
