Re: How to Save Big on Clothes for the Entire Family I hit the clearance racks and buy seasonal items a year out as well . Don't forget, if it rings up incorrectly at walmart (sometimes the floor ppl get ahead and put stickers on them before they re-price them in the register)...you can ask for a discount on top of the correction. I picked up some leggings for DD that were ringing up regular price instead of the 3.50 marked, I mentioned the misring discount and got them for .50. I believe its an automatic $3 discount per item..it hasn't happened in a while so I'm hazy.
I see there are only a few mentions of buying clothes second-hand. This is a life saver when it comes to the girls! I say girls b/c the boys clothes are usually so worn out after one kid the hand me downs stink. I frequent a charity thrift store in an UPSCALE area. I swear, there is some spoiled child out there one size ahead of my 10 year old DD. I'll walk in and there will be 20+ pairs of namebrand jeans/shorts/skirts/ in DD's size..all looking shiny and new. Of course, if you wore a particular size for all of 6-9 months and you had over 20 pairs of bottoms..how worn out would your clothes look? I'm talking old navy, gap, limited too, union bay, ect. I pick them up, on average for 3.99 per pair, sometimes less. Half of what I would have paid at walmart for generic jeans and about a sixith of what of would have paid if I had gone to those stores. I find that the stitching holds up alot better in the namebrand stuff too. Not to mention the money I'm paying goes to charity!
I also hit the yard sales in the upscale neighborhoods. I went to one a few weeks ago where the guy had just moved and decided to empty out his storage locker. There were two trash bags full of clothes from his now nearly adult daughter. One bag was the size DD was in now so I ignored it. The other was one size up and all he wanted was a quarter a piece. I got over a dozen tops, pants, and shorts, some with tags still on them and nearly all of it came from limited too.
When the girls hit pre-teen they start to take a particular interest in how they look. I've found some of the items I've purchased never get worn ("not my style") and I feel better about that when I paid a quarter than when I paid $4 off a clearance rack. DD also realizes that she can have stuff new...but in order for it to be affordable it will be very basic. OR she can have something nearly new (that no one has to know we bought used) that is extremely trendy. In fact, for her first day of school outfit last year, she picked out a pair of limited too embroidered and beaded brown cords (used) and a pink sequined tank top (clearanced). LoL..along with her free hillary duff lunch box. (Of course I had to buy the back pack to get the LB free...and then I was informed by her teacher that tho backpacks were permitted at school, she would not be allowing them in her class...and dd starts middle school next year which does have a NO backpack policy. So long story short, wound up buying something I didn't need to get something I did for free). |
