    QUESTION Freezing onions?

I got a 4 three pound bags of onions from a store that if you don't use them right away they get moldy in less than a week...So I decided the best way to store them would be freezing them.

I cut and sliced 12lbs of onions, measured out about a cup each and put them in sandwich bags THEN put them in freezer bags. For a month aftwards my freezer smelled of onions, as if that wasn't enough, it also lefts it taste in certain foods like ICE CREAM. When I put them in the freezer I tried not to put it near anything like ice cream since I could smell them already...however it didn't matter items on other shelves picked up the taste.

So does anyone have any suggestions on how to freeze these without stinking up my whole freezer? I put them in both my upright freezer and my chest freezer. The chest freezer had mostly meats except for 2 cartons of ice cream (I was almost out of room)-and they got the flavor. Stuff in the upright got it too, my son said he could taste it in certain things.

OMG onion flavored ice cream. I read your post an thought thats a good idea freezing onions because I hate to have onion smell on my hands and that is a great idea glove up once cut alot, freeze then pull the baggies out as I need them for dishes. I will be interested in any advise you come across along the way.

I purchased a lot of green peppers during the summers farmers market I sliced and cubed them let them freeze on a cookie sheet them bagged them and use as I need. Works great!

I didn't glove up...I had onion smell on my hands for a few days!!!! I don't mind onion smell so it wasn't the end of the world. I will say these were some juicy onions too, lots of moister before I froze them, but thawing them....LOTS MORE JIUCE (some to be expected but this is a lot!)....nice thing about freezing them is they have no "bite" to them, not flavor wise but they are already soft and don't require a lot of cooking time to soften them up. Hubby hates onions that have the slightest bit of crunch in the meal/dish.

I freeze onions when I find them on sale. Like you, the first time I did it, I put them in freezer bags, but got the same results you did. So, I transfered them to freezer containers instead. It takes up more room, but you don't get the smell.

you can use a big freezer container, lay them out flat "flash freeze" like the cookie sheet method, then once they are frozen in a single layer, bang the tray to break them up. Then transfer them into double bagged freezer bags?

Brilliant! I hate onions, but I'd almost freeze some after reading this.

Wow that is weird. I cut up and froze a bunch of onions and placed them in Hefty freezer bags and my freezer smells fine. Maybe it was the bags you used?

I freeze them all the time, all types, i just put them in 'one onion sized' portions and use my food saver. We've never had a problem. I did freeze green onions in a glad ware container, since i can store a lot in one container.

I wonder if when you buy the bags of frozen onions in the store if they make your freezer smell like onions? Those bags don't seem any thicker than a freezer bag.

I've never frozen onions just green peppers. I may have to give these a try though since we go through onions like water here. I will use the foodsaver. Thanks for the tips everyone.
