CHAT Which kind of stockpiler are you??

By the looks of things there are 2 kinds of stockpilers.

There are the people that coupon and look for things that are free or nearly free, and stockpile that kind of stuff, possibly combined with things they use alot of that are on sale for a good price ( case lot sales of soup. 10 boxes of cereal when it's on sale ect)

Then there are the super stockpilers, that not only do the above type of stockpiling, but also aspire to have a 6-12 month supply of all non-perishables and non food items, even if its stuff that wasn't on an 'amazing' deal, ( although still bought on sale with a coupon when possible)

In my mind although there are definate overlaps between the 2, the main differences are group A are doing it just to save money and Group B also has the prepare for the unknown mindset.

Group A is more likely to have things like air freshener and body wash (all bought free or just about) as well as random items of food (bought on really good deals, which each person defines differently)

Group B is more likely to have flour, sugar and beans. ( as well as the free air freshener)

In other words what is your main 'motivation' for stockpiling, just saving money or being prepared for anything

I am a group A stockpiler, I have alot of non food items, but even when I buy a ton of food items on a deal, its still only 1-2 months worth of something and its random things like cereal, soup and coffee

I am group a stockpiler too. I have a bunch of non-food but food, ugh I can never buy enough. My BF has an endless stomach. I'll need to buy the whole store in order to have a good sized pile.
My motovation for stockpiling is to save money, I need a new car so any money saved is good for me and right now with all the snow coming I dont need to bring my DD out in the stupid snow and getting her sick. I try so hard to pile food but I just cant. Man whats gonna happen when we have more kids??? well thats another story..sorry for digressing :)

Default Re: Which kind of stockpiler are you??

I am kinda both.

I have a stockpile of the non-foods etc. I buy mostly with a coupon and good deals. I have lots of non-food essentials, but only those that are excellent deals (or that we use a lot of).

But, I actually try to have a 1 yr supply of the essentials (things that have a super long shelf life) = Grains, rice, oats, wheat. Beans, sugar, honey, oil (only a 3 month since it can spoil), powdered milk. I also try to have a 3 month supply of the things we use on a regular basis (canned tomatoes, sauces etc.)

It is so nice to know that I don't have to rush out during a snow storm or a natural disaster of some kind. But, mostly, it is nice to know that if DH lost his job or worse, we wouldn't starve. It is great peace of mind.

I am more a group b stockpiler. That is my goal anyways. I would rather know we have food to survive on than that we have enough bodywash for the next decade. I do stockpile the other stuff that I can get cheap/free, that I know we use, but am trying to focus on ensuring we have what we need if something were to happen.

I am a group B stockpiler who buys at group A prices - i.e. when I can get mac & cheese for a rock bottom price - instead of buying 20 boxes I special order and get 300.

When Green Giant steamers were free after coupon I bought coupons and special ordered for 500 packages as we eat these every night.

I've had to live 100% from the stockpile before - we managed 9 months before it started getting a little bare & tricky to make meals from. That was 2 years ago, and now I have 3 times as much stuff.

I am a group b stockpilier. When I have a coupon to get food for cheap I stock up. I know if i have to we can live off our food stock for a least a couple of months. I can never seem to stock up on non food items ever. Just never seem to have a coupon for the sales.

I guess I am B but have done A before. Many free items I don't use though.
I can't say we have 6months worth of stuff but I stockpile as much as we can hold when it's on sale.

You are very lucky to have a store that is that open to using coupons without restricting the amounts.

Here in Canada our couponing is lilght years behind yours (they dont scan here and may stores will not allow internet printed coupons) many stores will limit quantity when using coupons.

But there is a drug store here in Western Canada that does allow full on stacking, with 2 limits, the item cant be free ( although on rare occasion some cashiers will allow $4 worth of coupons on a $3.99 item.) And the other rule is every coupon in the stack must be different in some way from the others in that stack. But you can have 2 stacks with the same coupon in each. we can have several from inserts as long as they are different in some way.

It makes it easy to get fem products, cleaner and OTC drugs dirt cheap ( but not free...lol)
