HELP Newbie! How do you store your product?

Ok, I was wondering, how do you store your stuff. I'm just starting out and I didn't know how to store things like cereal or pancake batter, cake mix, pasta, ect? I'm so affraid of bugs, I think they are called weebles? (little worm looking bugs) My mom taught me years ago to put a peice of speirment gum in the cubard and that has worked so far but thats with a small stock.

What about a good milk or bread sale? Do you freeze? If so what preperation do you do to help it not freeze?

Do you date your stuff? Do you stock the new to the back and old to the front?

What shelving do you use?

Thanks for sharing your tips!

There is a great guide to stockpile storage here.

You can probably find some of the other questions answered in the forum dedicated to stockpile questions, info.

I stock pile cereal and on the side of the box that has the list of vitamins, etc. I write the number that corresponds with the month that is shown on the top of the box. Ex: It is Oct. that is a 10. I'm still eating cereal in boxes that have a 5, from May, 2009. Still totally fresh. I've got some that have Feb. 2010 dates.
I store these in a kitchen cabinet and store them so the "number" shows in the front. NEVER had a bug problem with cereal. The plastic inside packaging seems good. I also stock pile instant oatmeal and again, never a bug problem, and I have maybe 30 boxes, rotating my meals from cereal, to frozen waffles or pancakes to oatmeal.
----------------
I've never frozen milk. We have stores and every 2-3 weeks here comes a gallon for $1.97 or $2.49 so I only use maybe a gallon a week so I do not stockpile milk.
Bread, I got about 12 free loaves of Sara Lee way back. I've got about 3 still frozen and when defrosted, the pieces of bread are partially hard, so stockpiling and freezing too much bread is not good. It will mold if left out or left in the refrigerator too long. I try for free bread, but if I can not find it, or run out of my stock of Sara Lee, I'll just buy the store brand for 99 cents. That's not a bad price when the other brands are over $2.00.
--------------
I do stock my canned goods, new in the back, and older in the front.
I have 6 kitchen cabinets packed with these items:
cereal in 2 cabinets, fruit cans and cups in 2 cabinets, soup or chili or salad dressings in 1 cabinet, and canned green beans, corn, tomatoes, greens, etc. in the other cabinet. Then 2 near full freezers, not the top of a refrigerator, but upright freezers.
All other stock pile like oatmeal, canned sodas, granola bars, snacks, etc. are all on wooden shelving outside the cabinets.
The only item where I have had bug problems is microwave popcorn. I had to throw out 4 packs, bugs had punctured the inner bag inside the plastic packaging, so those packs would not hold air for popping.
On canned goods, you could take a magic marker and write the date on the top of the can, maybe a 11 for cans you bought in Nov.

The only bugs I have are roaches, or fruit flies or maybe a mouse, no worms as you describe.

I got many packs of instant potatoes or muffin mixes. I keep those in my refrigerator if I have room, or in a plastic tote with locking top.

If you start to remember which coupons you see over and over, like Pillsbury, and which items that seem to always be on sale somewhere, then do not stockpile those items. The sales will be back, the coupons will be back. Use rain checks. Go Tuesday, the last sale day for me, and hope they are out of what you wanted. Get a rain check. This lets you wait until near your coupon expiration to use the coupon and still get the deal, and can lessen your need to stockpile so much.

Drink Gatorade or Powerade. When these plastic bottles are empty, let them dry, and pour into these, things like rice, pancake mix from boxes, etc.
Stockpiling can get out of hand. You may not use things as fast as you think. I'm still using hair spray from 2004 and some cans had to be thrown out. Still using rice from 2007, but it is safe and sound in empty Gatorade bottles. When I'm out of certain items, I will not stockpile those again.
Home canned goods are ok to eat as long as 10-12 years back, so canned goods from the store are similar. I do not keep things that long, but my father gives me home canned vegetables and some are from 2002 and 100% fine.

When I'm out of a low cost national brand using coupons, I just but the cheap store brands until another coupon deal on that same type item comes along.
