Thumbs Down have you ever stockpiled hair spray?

I bought alot of cans of Rave hair spray. I was ready for a new can and shook it and it sounded funny and would not spray. The next can was the same. The 3rd can sent out some spray but it was not a spray but more of a stream. These cans did not sound like a new one, new ones don't make much noise.

I guess the pressure inside each can has leaked out of the seams of the cans over the many months?

anyone had this happen when stockpiling hair spray?

I only stockpile pump hairspray. I got it free at Walmart awhile back. I prefer the aerosol but free is better. lol

How long has it been stored? Did you store indoors or in the garage/basement -- i.e. what temperature fluctuations did it undergo in the year(s) that it was stored? I'm just curious. I've never stock-piled it before but I just bought about 6 cans of the herbal essence hair spray this week with the Walgreens RR deal and I hoped to store it for awhile.

stored in the mobile home where I live but the climate control is not good. Hotter than a normal house, and colder than a normal house.
I'd say 45 degrees to 90 degrees and that is not counting the cold nights like under 30. I only had a heater in the living area and the cans were stored in a hallway cabinet. I had about 16 cans, so they are pretty old. Some of the Rave have a small cap (the thing you press to release the spray) and some have a larger cap, though the variety is the same, level 4 I think for extra hold. I was getting all bad cans with small caps and then the 4th one had a large cap and worked fine. One of the bad cans the metal part of the can was dented in, loss of pressure I think. If you store only 6 in a climate controlled home, 65-80 degrees you should have no problems.

I bought a can of Rave 4X Mega hairspray from my local grocery store at the beginning of the year (they were on clearance - 50% off at the time). I only bought one can and began using it right away, so I don't think it underwent any climate changes between the store and my house. I used it fine for several weeks and all of the sudden the same thing you described earlier started to happen. I can hear that there is plenty of hairspray in the can when I shake it, but either little or nothing comes out when I press the spray cap thing (I still have the can, hoping I can figure out how to fix it sometime, lol!). I thought maybe the nozzle was clogged, but figured out that is not the problem.

Did you only stockpile and have problems with the Rave brand hairspray, or other kinds also? If it was just Rave, maybe they had a "defective" batch!
I will only be online every few days, so I may be a bit slow to respond.

I have only used Rave in recent years. I had 7 cans still left when I ran out the other day, and the 5 with the small white thingy where the spray comes out are all bad. I can press the side of the can with my fingers and squeeze it.
The other 2 have the large piece and spray fine. I'll check the size in the future. One outer blue cap had 2004 on it so these cans may be 5 years old.

    from a handyman specialist.
Other than that mechanism, I don't see how temperature should have an effect. Time, on the other hand, certainly will. There are at least 2 mechanical seals that cannot ever be perfect: The spray valve and the seal around the stem of the spray valve. Time may have simply allowed the propellant to bleed away.

I only buy pump hairspray, but other aerosol cans (like glade and lysol sanitizer) that I stored in my garage (in TX heat) are fine.

it must be "time" that causes it. The propellant leaks out as the cheap cans are not 100% sealed forever.
One of my cans was marked 2004, so 5 years old.
As far as Rave, I guess me-you should make sure we buy the cans with the large white thingy that releases the spray and limit how many cans we get.
I have no experience with other brands.

Okay, you will all laugh at me! The can of hairspray in my bathroom is at least 7 years old (I know I bought it before I had kids) and it is an aerosol and works just fine; I used it last week. Can you tell I don't use hairspray much? It has been stored in our bathroom the whole time. It is Clinique brand.

I suspect that you are experiencing a manufacturing fault. Maybe the company will replace them for you as a goodwill gesture if you notify them.
