Default Frozen Meats

Hi stockpilers,

I'm cleaning out the cabinets and freezers, tossing the expired stuff and doing an "inventory" of my stash before I re-enter the couponing game in a few weeks.

I am kind of a doofus when it comes to frozen stuff. I send stuff to the freezer with good intentions, but when it comes time to take it out I'm like...eh....

I came across some frozen tilapia fillets that were purchased about two years ago, maybe. Do you think it may be still good?

I also came across some meat that was gifted to me about two years ago - the kind that comes straight from the butcher and is wrapped in butcher paper. I believe it's ground beef. Still good, or toss?

Thanks so much for your expert help!

I found these guidelines from the USDA. I do note it says for "quality" only it doesn't say it's unsafe to eat.....I guess assuming it is stored properly. HTH!
Freezer Storage Chart (0 °F)
Note: Freezer storage is for quality only. Frozen foods remain safe indefinitely.

ItemMonthsBacon and Sausage1 to 2Casseroles2 to 3Egg whites or egg substitutes 12Frozen Dinners and Entrees3 to 4Gravy, meat or poultry 2 to 3Ham, Hotdogs and Lunchmeats 1 to 2Meat, uncooked roasts 4 to 12Meat, uncooked steaks or chops 4 to 12Meat, uncooked ground 3 to 4Meat, cooked 2 to 3Poultry, uncooked whole 12Poultry, uncooked parts 9Poultry, uncooked giblets 3 to 4Poultry, cooked 4Soups and Stews2 to 3Wild game, uncooked8 to 12

Stuff I find questionable can be cooked and used for cat/dog food!

I would toss the fish, keep the meat.

In general, defrost it before you use it and smell it. Smells foul? Throw it away. I have kept ground beef for 2 years with no trouble.

A lot depends on your packing skills. There are lots of threads here with tips on proper packing.

pack well, label contents and date....use oldest stock before newest always.

Good luck!

Thank you very much for responding to my question! The USDA was a very helpful link. I will throw out the fish but thaw the ground beef and check it before chucking. Thanks!
