    Default Freezing milk

So do you just stick the whole gallon of milk in the freezer or do I need to put it in some other container? And if you freeze the whole gallon how long will it stay good after you thall it out?

I just put mine in the freezer when I am putting up my groc. sometimes I may take about 1/2 c. out if the kids want some.

It can take a couple days to thaw out. After the first day that it has had tho thaw the kids start drinking , it has the ice in - they like it.

I do the same thing. Just stick it right in the freezer. I do like the half gallons better. They are easier to thaw. We live 47 miles from a store so milk is a must have.

Pour a little out of the top and then freeze with the cap back on. It last up to three months from the time you freeze it. Now the way you know when it goes bad is say the date on the jug says use before june 7th. You bought it say on the 1st. Then when you thaw it out you have a week to drink it. Its best to right it on a piece of paper when you froze the jugs and tape it on the freezer. Also your supposed to thaw them in the fridge but I find this takes way to long. I just wrap mine in a dish towel and thaw out for about 10 hours on the counter. Usually it still has a huge block of ice in the center and then i shake it up to break up the ice and put it in the fridge. Then in the morning its still frozen usually so i shake it up some more and let it thaw out another hour or so on the counter and put back in the fridge. Otherwise you will probably have ice in your milk forever and you need to shake it so the fat is even.

Do Not just stick a jug of milk you just bought straight into the freezer.

Before freezing you will need to pour some of the milk out of the jug---about 1 to 1 1/2 cups---the reason is because liquids expand as they freeze
. If you do not leave some head space, the jug can split or the cap can be pushed off as it freezes---and then you have a big mess to clean up. Trust me on this one---yea it happened to me---you really do learn from your mistakes.

Skim milk freezes the best, followed by 1%, 2% then whole milk.
Also, the higher the fat content of the milk, the more likely it is to absorb odors from other foods. Placing a container of baking soda next to the milk can help with this.

My mother froze milk a lot when I was a kid. She just put the whole jug in the freezer intact and if it happened to leak out a bit, then no big deal because things happen. I can fondly remember going to our outside freezer for milk, bread and donuts. So.... Freeze away!!!
