I didn't have to worry about the size I bought- my sister-in-law gave ours to us as a housewarming gift. But your formula sounds feasible!
Great idea! :)
Ok I read alot and found in an msn article about freezer saving you money that each cubic foot holds about 35 pounds of food. This got me thinking with what people's family size versus how big their freeze where. Some said too big and some said too small. There is a formula I think works:
Each adult x 200 pounds+each child under 12 x 100 pounds/35= size cubic
example: 2 adults x 200 = 400
+ one child x 100= 100

total is 500 now divide by 35 = 14.28 so either a 14 or 15 would right.
Any body over 12 is an adult in this formula.
I am a math teach so I just sit around and think about these things. Yes nerdy, I know.
Tell me what you think!

Nice! That is a nice formula. I am buying one smaller than your idea suggests, but that is only because of space limitations. (I would gladly have the 14 cubic ft one or larger if I could fit it in here lol!!!)
I have two freezers on is 25 cubic feet and the other 20
we have according to your math 4 adults and 3 children
So we have more freezer space than needed LOL

Well you are close to what might expect with the formula. They don't sell 32 cubic foot freezers, so you are only 13 ft over. I am 7 cubic over myself but my freezer was free!
but for couponers, you need to then take your end number and multiply it by 1.5 since we stock up more than the normal (hummm) person.
So what is the basis for the 200 and 100-lb. givens?

Wouldn't the size of the packaging would have to be taken into consideration? Lots of frozen foods are way over packaged for the freezer.
Great formula - but you probably need to add a bit of space for the crazy people like me who still have the top tier of their wedding cake in the freezer - yes, I know, it is time for it to go!
You're only supposed to save the cake for a year, lol. We forgot ours at our JP's house and he actually kept it until his girlfriend moved out and took it with her (she bought the house two doors down). When we went up for Thanksgiving she gave it back to us perfectly wrapped in saran wrap and tupperware.
Sounds like a decent formula, I'm guessing weight is based on size of said person? I don't think you can have too much freezer space so long as you're not restricted and can fill it reasonably full.
