Depending on how strong his deodorant is (the anti-perspirant isn't the scented part) and how much he uses and how long its been in the fabric it could take some doing before it neutralizes it...I dunno. I'll have to smell DH's when we wash htis weekend.

can you use this in HE machines?

thanks

I have never tried to make my own laundry soap before, may have to try it if i accumulate more soap. I just donated 35 j&j's and only have about 10 left in the stockpile, I plan on taking a few to India, the small size will be good for the trip.

You can use it in HE machines. Most of the sites I researched on said it is good for use in HE due to the low sudsing, I would start with less than you'd think and see what works best.

I have been using the following recipe for over a year, and not only does it work great, but has saved us a ton of money. I have 4 kids, 3 of which are teenagers. We are very active and involved in sports and outdoor activities. This stuff works! I store mine in a big Tide container a friend gave me. Since my recipe only uses 1/3 of a bar of Fels Naptha it really cuts down on the cost. I do still use a pretreater or stain stick for bad stains.

Homemade Laundry Soap

1/3 bar grated soap
6 cups water
1/2 cup borax
1/2 cup washing soda
2 gallons hot water

I heat the grated soap in 6 cups of water and stir until the soap is dissolved. Add the borax and washing soda and stir until dissolved. Add this mixture to a 2 gallon bucket of hot water and stir. Stir occasionally over the next 24 hours while cooling. If it separates while cooling just stir well to mix.

OP i made your recipe last night followed everything exactly, and mine came out smelly. Is it suppose to smell like that ? It kind of smells something close to the way garbage does on a really hot day. Gross i know. I just can not figure it out.

I also use them to scrub the tub!It works wonders on those "rings" after oil bath soaks or bubble baths. If your really sneaky teach the little kids to "play cars" with them and run laps around the tub.

I like the homemade laundry soap idea too!

*giggles* sorry couldn't help myself.

You want to leave it fluffed up. If you pack it down it won't scoop easy and that kind of defeats the purpose. When I make the powdered soap I grate it, then mix it with the other ingredients and break it up with my fingers (kind of the way you'd mix butter into flour) so its all nice and finely grated. The smaller pieces of soap will dissolve better.
