Around October, I try to stock up on paper goods and pantry essentials for the winter, as Winters here can be really bad. Things like canned goods, juice, etc. I try to stock up on as much as possible to limit my time out in storms.

My goal for stockpiling right now has changed a bit. Since the floods in corn country last week, I've decided I need to be seriously stockpiling meat. It's pretty much flooding the market right now with farmers dumping their meat before the winter feed time. Feed is going to be super expensive. So I'm looking for beef and chicken sales.

I've been stockpiling for over a year and could probably feed our extended family for at least six months. I've been trying to predict which products will increase most in price and stockpile while they are relatively cheap. My reasoning my be faulty but I think any products that are heavy....pop, cleaning supplies , alcohol , etc. will increase because transportation costs will rise, ditto bulky items such as toilet paper , diapers, paper towels. Meat is bound to go up as farmers reduce their herds. There is not much hope that everything isn't going to significantly rise. I was a young wife in the late 70's when there was horrible inflation and it is not a fun thing to live through.

I recommend anyone who can to stockpile what they can now. As you pointed out, costs are going to skyrocket and coupons won't go as far as they used to.

I am super stacking food now due to the reports of the meat situation. I am an not a omnivore; I am concerned grains and corn will skyrocket in the next year. Groceries were super expensive before this whole scenario played out. I need to lessen the dent in my wallet.

Easily I would say that I could sustain us at least a yr, maybe longer in all aspects of our lives. Now, there are some things, like HBA, cleaners, etc. that would be at least 3 times that.

We are already in a recession and I think we are headed for another depression. I've been stockpiling food, diapers/pullups/wipes cleaners, hba, toiletries, vitamins/otc meds, powdered milk, baking goods, batteries, pet food (have like a 3 yrs supply) etc. in preparation. Maybe we won't and I'll just really be sitting at a great position and only have to buy perishables next year. Who knows. We are also gardening w/my inlaws this summer and I am learning to can what we harvest for later on down the line. I also thank the good Lord that I live in a rural area and we have a means to hunt/fish and the necessary things to do that. We have also been buying ammo here and there as well.

I also have my kids in clothes/shoes/undies for at least the next 2 yrs. it's just something that i've always done since before they were born by shopping the clearances. And we have oil lamps and the oil for those too.

We also have camping supplies (like coleman stove, and propane for our gas grill, etc.) We also have a generator too. If all else fails, we'd build a fire to cook. If it got that bad, we would still survive. Wouldn't be the kind of eating that we're doing now, but we would eat and it would be mostly deer, rabbit, squirrel and fish.

And i know there are things that i am forgetting and it may sound a bit extreme, but honestly, this world that we live in scares the crap out of me. it is incredibly uncertain and i just feel that you can't be too prepared. in the event that nothing happens, well, these are all things that we use anyways, so i would just be more prepared for 2009-2010 and life would keep on rolling and we would just live off the stockpile.

Everything scares me half to death. Dh came home over a month ago talking about what he had overheard w/a possibility of the trucker's striking. That was enough to light a fire under me and make me start heavily getting my stockpile back and keeping it up. I've been buying even more metal shelves for my sunroom to store stuff on. And I need to go buy 2 more. LOL I just think that in today's time you just can't be "too prepared".

There are elders in our family who were never fiscally responsible. They also live in LOND. We are planning to visit them in December. We will bring about 3 years worths of HBA.

His co. is also very family-oriented, so I know they'd make sure DS and I were OK if anything happened to him.
For me room for stockpile is not a problem, besides space in a freezer. I also do not like to leave it in hands of chance if something will happened and we'll have to severely cut up expences.
I cannot say a certain item is 2 months or 8 months worth, buy when I see a good sale for the item in demand in our family I will get it.

My youngest son has a milk allergy and I've been checking into things. A soy milk maker costs just over $100. And you can purchase dry soy beans for a longer term food storage, and 50 lbs costs $19.90. WAY cheaper than dry milk... and the soy milk maker brews is up rather quickly.

thoughts? comments?

My son is only able to drink soy milk as well, and I didn't know you could make your own soy milk. I looked some up on ebay and they were running around a $100 like you said, but is it really worth it? I was wondering how long it takes to make it? And what kind of store can you go to to purchase soy beans?
