My idea of my stockpile is to get everything we need for about a month, and then never pay for it again...that way, I can stockpile anything I get for free. As far as other things that I can't get for free ( or with overages) then we just buy them. I have never thought about it the way many of your are, as we live rural and could pretty much "live off the land" (Literally) if we had to.... I mean if it were THAT bad where every store was closed and there was NO food, I am sure that even my mother (who hates that we hunt) would eat a deer!

I'm not sure I understood what you meant. Do you only buy enough to last you a month?

A deer?! My sister and her family live in Montana and have "harvested" many a bear! Gotta' be careful though, they tell me that you can get a mouth full of fur....if you don't skin it first!

We love deer and dove at this house. Deer is actually some of the healthiest meat you can eat. And one good sized deer makes a serious meat stockpile!

HAPPY DANCE Re: What are your goals for stockpiling?

I have a decade's supply of garbage bags, razors, toothbrushes, school supplies, birthday supplies, and floss. I also have 2 sizes worth of cloths and 5 sizes worth of shoes for my son.

I have a 3 year stock pile of shampoo, soap, Q-tips, TP, toothpaste, shaving cream, J&J buddy soap, dish washing tablets, tissue, band-aids, deodorants, perfume, cologne, and Braun razor cleaner.

I have a 1.5 year supply of laundry detergent, Purell, hair spray, mouth wash, women's supplies, and vitamins.

I have a 6 month supply of cereal, paper towels, pasta sauce, pasta, salsa, and black olives.

I have a 3 month supply of diapers, soda, wipes, and cleaning supplies (I make my own natural cleaning supplies).

I have 30 q's waiting to stock up on non-refridge soy milk which should last over a year and many other products.

This may appear to be excessive; that I shop everyday. I shop once a week dictated by the flyers and bi-weekly (or monthly) for groceries. Each poster's stock pile size differs based on their family size. We are a family of three so we work slowly through our stockpiles.

I realized CVS was about to drastically change their coupon acceptance policy. I super stacked coupon's during the Energize/free CVS tissue period and stocked up. I've also hit Target's post xmas sale the past 3 years (garbage bags at 90% off + $2 q per 40 ct box for example).

I have an additional 4 boxes of merchandise sitting here for a flea market this weekend.

Thanks... love yours too. Let me know when you're up.

The shelf life shouldn't have anything to do with the vessel. The problem is that the aspertame degrades alot faster than regular sugar.

regarding storing milk...

I noticed that dry milk is super expensive. I just bought 50 lbs of dry milk and it cost me $150.

Has anyone ever given thought to storing soy beans for soy milk?

My youngest son has a milk allergy and I've been checking into things. A soy milk maker costs just over $100. And you can purchase dry soy beans for a longer term food storage, and 50 lbs costs $19.90. WAY cheaper than dry milk... and the soy milk maker brews is up rather quickly.

thoughts? comments?

I really want to start making soy milk and rice milk. I think we would use it more than cows milk, although we can and do drink cows milk. I'd love to hear from someone that has a machine for making it, I've heard you can use a juicer as well. We live 20 miles from town and running in to pick up milk isn't an opption. We're even thinking about getting chickens! I'm up to gathering eggs but not milking a cow. lol

Just had to say thanks for the laugh. Somehow I pictured your wife or yourself standing on a street corner in some 1920's era depression-type background going, "Please, sir, will you buy some more? KY is a necessity you know!"

I've often thought that stockpiling could be of benefit to those that do it in a war-torn state, b/c at that point EVERYTHING would be expensive and not only would we have enough for ourselves, but we could sell/trade what we had for what we wanted/needed. And who would be better prepared to do some serious trading than a long-time couponer, lol? We do trades with one another all the time!
