I know food prices are high, but 80% increase? Where do you live?
| Yup. Its true... and I'm in Idaho. The regular loaf of bread I USED to buy, I paid less than $2, around $1.75-$1.88. In three months time, the same loaf at the same store is about $3.25-$3.36- and this is at the cheapest store I could find!
For the loaf of bread @ $1.88, 80% is $1.50; $1.88 + $1.50= $3.38
Milk. Everyone knows these prices have increased also... and there are several other items that I used to buy, but am cutting back because the prices have increased so much. Scary, eh? |

| Re: What are your goals for stockpiling? I started stockpiling after 9/11. It freaked me out so much I felt the need to have enough stuff in the house that if something were to happen I wouldnt HAVE to go to the store. My SUperfresh used to double $1 coupons every day, so creating a good stockpile was easy. In about 6 months I had a year worth of almost all the things we use that I got free or nearly free. I also have several years of "storage type" foods such as flour, dried beans, pasta, and rice sealed in 5 gallon buckets (go ahead and laugh - Im used to it )
Two years ago Superfresh stopped doubling the dollar coupons and money got tight. So we had to start using the stockpile. It has dwindled down considerably, I had to buy tp a few months ago for the first time in years. But, in my opinion, the reason you have a stockpile is to be able to use it if you need it. It really helped to not have to do much grocery shopping.
Now, with the economy the way it is, I am back on a mission! I dont have those double dollars anymore but I am still doing great. As things go on sale I am getting a years worth. On memorial weekend I got all the condiments for a year for nearly free. And next weekend I will get whatever that weeks great deal is. I feel compelled to have that years worth again. |

Do you have Sam's close to you? I bought two loaves of my bread the other day for $3.79. We use Sara Lee Whole Grain White. |

formula (yes, my 20-month-old drinks formula, flame away ;)
quote]
My DD was on formula until right after her thrid b-day (which was this past FEB). Same formula she had been on since a baby. She had to for medical reasons.
We are seriously thinking about putting her back on it. Her growth had just about stopped, and her GI is really pushing us to start it up again...
She will probably be taking it to kindergarten at this rate...

They were projecting pop to increase to $12 for a 24 case, and then $25 for beer... can you believe it? | Seriously!!! oh my! That's not good. Gonna have to stockpile some more soda for our house. Too bad the diet doesn't have a very long shelf life. *sigh*
Anyway, We have some things that could probably last us for 6+ months, and some things that could last us only a month. DH is going to be building a larger pantry for me out in the garage. When that happens I will see how much I really want to stock. But, i am thinking that 4 months on average is probably good for us. There are only 3 of us in the house, and I don't want to have things sitting around for too long.
I do hope that food prices level off. I have noticed that the deals just aren't what they used to be... but, they are generally cyclical... so we shall see what happens.
