You guys have me thinking I just started with all this. And was like wow I am glad I have an extra bedroom to store stuff in LOL.

Right now I have about 2 months of tp. and 6 months of tooth brushes for dh, and 6 monthes of tooth brushes for the boys...I still have to buy me some.

Shampoo...about 2 months but I need to stock up on kids stuff now too.

I know food prices are high, but 80% increase? Where do you live?
Yup. Its true... and I'm in Idaho. The regular loaf of bread I USED to buy, I paid less than $2, around $1.75-$1.88. In three months time, the same loaf at the same store is about $3.25-$3.36- and this is at the cheapest store I could find!

For the loaf of bread @ $1.88, 80% is $1.50; $1.88 + $1.50= $3.38

Milk. Everyone knows these prices have increased also... and there are several other items that I used to buy, but am cutting back because the prices have increased so much. Scary, eh?

Default Re: What are your goals for stockpiling?

I started stockpiling after 9/11. It freaked me out so much I felt the need to have enough stuff in the house that if something were to happen I wouldnt HAVE to go to the store. My SUperfresh used to double $1 coupons every day, so creating a good stockpile was easy. In about 6 months I had a year worth of almost all the things we use that I got free or nearly free. I also have several years of "storage type" foods such as flour, dried beans, pasta, and rice sealed in 5 gallon buckets (go ahead and laugh - Im used to it )

Two years ago Superfresh stopped doubling the dollar coupons and money got tight. So we had to start using the stockpile. It has dwindled down considerably, I had to buy tp a few months ago for the first time in years. But, in my opinion, the reason you have a stockpile is to be able to use it if you need it. It really helped to not have to do much grocery shopping.

Now, with the economy the way it is, I am back on a mission! I dont have those double dollars anymore but I am still doing great. As things go on sale I am getting a years worth. On memorial weekend I got all the condiments for a year for nearly free. And next weekend I will get whatever that weeks great deal is. I feel compelled to have that years worth again.

Holy cow! I wonder why it's so high there. I do pay a bit more for my bread (used to be ~$1.99) but it's only $2.19 now. Sometimes goes on sale for $2.

Do you have Sam's close to you? I bought two loaves of my bread the other day for $3.79. We use Sara Lee Whole Grain White.

formula (yes, my 20-month-old drinks formula, flame away ;)

My DD was on formula until right after her thrid b-day (which was this past FEB). Same formula she had been on since a baby. She had to for medical reasons.

We are seriously thinking about putting her back on it. Her growth had just about stopped, and her GI is really pushing us to start it up again...

She will probably be taking it to kindergarten at this rate...

I saw/heard on the news that with the increase in gas, trucking companies and farmers are having to pass on the additional expense to the consumer. They were saying that this is part of the reason for the increase in prices.

But also, there are major wheat farms in Australia and South America that failed last year (they supply lots to the US), so the shortage of white wheat is driving the prices of wheat based products up as well.

Finally, in making beer and soda, oil is used to run the machinery. With the increase in oil prices, the news folks were projecting that beer and pop prices would drastically increase. We don't drink alcohol in my house, but my DH is a pop fiend and paying $12 for a 12 pack of pepsi would break the bank in our house. They were projecting pop to increase to $12 for a 24 case, and then $25 for beer... can you believe it?

Seriously!!! oh my! That's not good. Gonna have to stockpile some more soda for our house. Too bad the diet doesn't have a very long shelf life. *sigh*

Anyway, We have some things that could probably last us for 6+ months, and some things that could last us only a month. DH is going to be building a larger pantry for me out in the garage. When that happens I will see how much I really want to stock. But, i am thinking that 4 months on average is probably good for us. There are only 3 of us in the house, and I don't want to have things sitting around for too long.

I do hope that food prices level off. I have noticed that the deals just aren't what they used to be... but, they are generally cyclical... so we shall see what happens.

I love the avatar! Speaking of, I'll be up north for awhile.

Harris Teeter just had a $1.99/12-pack on Coke Products here. So I bought 12 and have rainchecks for another 12. I really can't see soda going up that much, though. Also going to stockpile some 2L and have some Capri Sun from when it was $1 at Harris Teeter.

I wonder if the cans have a better shelf life than the bottles, or vice versa.

Beth119 - once I get her off the bottle, I honestly couldn't care less how long she stays on formula. My brothers were on soy formula until they were several years old, and they turned out pretty good. ;) Now if only it were a lot cheaper! Then again, it doesn't "go bad" as quickly as milk, so maybe it is cheaper...

I have about 4-6 months stockpile for shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, laundry detergent, swiffer, claritin. I have about one year supply of hair coloring.
It's harder to stockpile food for me. I don't use a lot of box/canned food, so I'm still learning to get more coupons for food and produce. You all have been great source and helps!

I remember watching those goofy Civil Defense skits at school! You know the one's that have all of the boys and girls crawling under their desks to ride out the nuclear blast? Or the turtle with the hard hat on directing you the the CD shelters? Makes me wonder.....I think if my wife could just secure one more case of KY money maker deals with all of the $3.00/1 coupons she has left from the LRAFB, we just might make it through WWIII and have some spending money left over!
