like anything else you stockpile, I recommend:
buy enough on sale to get you to the next mega super stockpiling sale.
When the price is unbeatable, stockpile as much as you possibly can.
I once had coupons and used them at a sale at Shoprite many years ago for detergent. They came out to .25 a bottle. I bought cases and cases of it. I just finished the last bottle this week. :-)
I now have an HE washer. I planned ahead and bought HE detergent a year ago, when I found a great deal and got them for .50 (or $1) a bottle (alas no more .25 bottles here). They have been sitting in my garage for a year, waiting for the new machine I was saving up to buy.
Detergent does not go bad. Stockpile to your hearts content.
I try to have a year supply on hand without panicking. The last thing you want to do is run out and have to run to the store and pay $5 a bottle.
If you are not sure how much is a years supply..track your usage. Get a notebook. Figure out how long a bottle lasts you. Keep track for a while, and you will see a trend. Do this for every single item you use regularly in your household. I keep a chart in a notebook. It helps you plan ahead to get you to the next stockpile moment.
