Default I need some advice

I've been stockpiling food seriuosly for about 3 months now and think I'm soing really well. We have a lot of the stuff we use on a regular basis but I have a small problem. My DH and DS like to eat more of the sweet things when we have them in the house. For example: I had q's for $1 of cake mix and it went on sale 10/$10 so I bought about 6 of them. Since they are in the house my DH made one and it was gone in two days. A couple of days later he decided he wanted something sweet and made another. How can I make him understand that just because it's here doesn't mean he needs to eat it more often. We usually one make a cake once a month or so. When I say something he acts like I think he's a pig or something and that he thinks that I want to buy something and keep it forever and not eat it but it's not like that at all. How do I make him understand that we should continue eating like we ate before I started stockpiling and this is to save money in the long run?

good luck I sort of quit stockpiling sweets and snacks because my dh will just eat all the tasty, sweet, easy, snacky food . I do keep some around but I sort of hide it in big rubbermaid plastic tubs with lids. If he has to look too hard for it he gives up.

Yep, better hide it if you don't want it gobbled up so fast. My dh knows my hiding places, but he also knows that if it is not in the cabinets with everything else I am probably "saving it" for something special and he usually leaves it be or at least asks first.

I used to try to hide it, badger him about it and even not buy it all together. But, the big difference was when I sat him down and told him that this was something I was seriously doing, and I am building up this stockpile, not so he can have a daily snack, but to make sure that if anything ever happens, we have food, drinks and even goodies to fall back on. I also designate a "dessert of the week" and make it on mondays. If its gone before the week is out, then its gone.

My DH got all huffy when I asked him to not eat up everything I just bought, too. When I actually sat him down and explained that this was in my job description as a wife and mother, then he got it. He wouldn't want me to spend up his whole weekly paycheck in one day on something frivilous like a pair of shoes i'll never wear, so don't do the same with my stockpile!

I store things like cake mixes in the deep freezer. If I shop when hubby will not be there when I get back and I put the groceries away while he is gone, then he usually doesn't know we even have certain snacks unless I put the snacks where we usually keep them in the pantry. He will not look for something that he doesn't know is there.

Good luck! I simply don't buy them no more or very little. My DS gained about 20 unneeded lbs in the first year I was stockpiling - and there was never any good stuff left for me when I wanted it. I could talk until I am blue in the face - didn't help. We did the rational talks; the "watch it else you get fat" talks, LOL; I had tempertantrums when I caught him sneaking; he got work details and had to rebuy @ full price out of his pocket [think Dove chocolate deal - I'm surprised he didn't kill himself with it back then] - none helped. Now I just buy a very small amount of the sweet "extras" and that's it.

Thanks for the advice, I think that maybe I'll try the talk Dhunny318 mentioned and if that doesn't work I'll not stockpile as much. Maybe get 1 or 2 when they're free and hide one of them. Thanks everybody.

Don't keep temptation in the house if he can't handle it being around. Hiding food simply can make it more desireable-- when found its like hitting the food Lotto/Jackpot.

I know it may sound harsh but perhaps the best way to deal with this is to make the treats a specialty item once or so a month as they were before, and only buy what you need to make that item on hand. It might cost a tad more than it would to stockpile, but at least you know that hubby isn't harming himself with mindless (meaning eating just to eat) eating. If you save on everything else, then the extra cost of the dessert one time a month isn't all that bad.

When I first started couponing, and was able to get name brand treats and goodies that we had not had in the house in a long, long time, the kids and the dh went nuts. They ate it about as fast as I brought it in. But now, they know that there will always be treats and the newness has worn off. So, things last a lot longer.

I guess I'm kinda lucky we're short about 5 ft. Okay, hubby's 5'3''. I put everythnig like that on the highest shelfs in the pantry. You kinda have to really want it, to get it.
