CHEF A way to use the ends of that expensive healthy bread.

I buy the Sare Lee Healthy Harvest 100% Natural, Whole Wheat bread. We have always throwed away the end peices. So I started picking at one and feeding it to my 13 month old and he loved it. So I started balling up little pieces and putting it in a container with lid for snacks, instead of the gerber finger foods I was giving him. I tear away the outer crusty edges because too much of the crust and they wont stick in little balls .

I dry the ends out in the toaster oven and make bread crumbs.

DS recently stopped eating the crusts on his sandwiches, ever since he saw his cousin not eating it. ARGH.. But when we get down to the end of the a loaf and if we're having PB&J sandwiches, I just turn the heel of the bread and slather it with PB, and use the inner side as the outside of his sandwich. So far he hasn't figured it out yet! lol

I should use them to make croutons though, is there a trick to that?

We cube the slices, then let it sit out to get a little stale. We coat the bottom of a pan with some olive oil (Very small amount!) and then add some seasonings to the bread-- we usually use garlic flakes or garlic pepper. I usually have them in at the same time as something else so I couldn't even tell you how long to bake them for-- it's usually at the universal 350, and then I push them around on the pan every few minutes so that the olive oil redistributes on the bread and it gets crispy. Unfortunately most of my cooking is trial and error and when people ask "How did you do that?" my answer is "Oh..a little of this...a little of that, and then I just added such and such until it looked good." You've inspired me to start writing stuff down

I do the same as BzyBee with ends and old bread.

We tend only to use a half a bag of burger buns. Homemade garlic bread, and Grilled cheese (brown side in) are the bomb-diggity on these. Crunchy, melty.....goodness
