News All CT Shaws stores are being sold to Shop-Rite

    Stratford Shaw's to become ShopRite

All Shaw’s stores in Connecticut will soon be sold.

SUPERVALU announced Friday it has reached agreements with Wakefern for the sale of 11 Shaw’s stores to individual owners, and with Stop & Shop for the sale of five Shaw’s stores.

Shaw’s currently has stores in Stratford, Fairfield and Darien.

Wakefern operates both ShopRite and PriceRite supermarkets.

The Stratford store, on Barnum Avenue Cut-Off, and the Fairfield store, on Black Rock Turnpike, will both become Wakefern ShopRite locations, a spokesman said.

“We look forward to increasing our presence in Connecticut. Each one of our members who live and work in the area are excited to bring the high quality, low prices, great service and the sense of family and community spirit that the public has come to expect,” Joseph Colalillo, chairman of the board and CEO of Wakefern, said in a press release.

The sales are expected to close this spring. The new stores will be closed for renovation and remerchandising and most will begin to reopen throughout spring and summer of 2010, Wakefern announced. Pharmacy service will not be interrupted during the transition.

The Darien Shaw's, located in the Goodwives Shopping Plaza, will become a Stop & Shop.

The Shaw’s on Bridgeport Avenue in Shelton closed in June, 2009. It is being replaced by a ShopRite.

SUPERVALU continues to seek buyers for two additional stores in Connecticut.

“While these decisions are always difficult, given the impact on associates and customers, they ultimately allow us to operate more efficiently and effectively within a highly competitive retail environment,” Pete Van Helden, SUPERVALU executive vice president of retail operations, said in a press release.

Shaw’s continues to operate 176 stores in five New England states.

SUPERVALU was advised by William Blair & Company LLC relating to this transaction, according to a press release.

I talked to one of the employees that works in the Southbury Shaw's. They said that they are being sold to a non-union ShopRite so none of their employees are guaranteed jobs at the new store. The Canton store is being sold to ShopRite also, but because they are unionized their employees either will keep their jobs with the new store or be given a good severance package.
