We've just decided to tell them yes and then not hand it over when they ask if we have a card. They rarely ask if we want to use our card, just if we have one (silly US and their poor grasp of proper spoken English). They normally don't know what to do then so they just keep scanning.

The last girl that took my keys and scanned my card got an earful about stealing property and her manager got the same. Nowhere does it say I have to scan my card first. You can scan it first, last or at any time in between. Scanning it halfway through a long list of sale items can actually confuse and freeze the register...so its for their sanity I wait til the end and it helps me keep track of prices, especially with clearance merchandise or poorly labeled endcaps.

I can't believe you're getting nasty e-mails TON. I actually haven't seen either of our stores be out of anything, which is pretty typical. Granted I don't live near you in CT, but seriously.

Once you know the price they are ringing up at, you can figure out that your pre-card total is sufficient, so it won't matter when they scan the card in subsequent transactions.

I have had to train my own area stores, since I know much more about this than most of them ever will. I'm usually just nice about it.
Both times this happened, they had not started scanning, asked for the card very nicely, and stood with their hands behind their backs until we handed the card over. My DH just says I am finding it and searches his pockets, they usually start scanning right away but not this time. Thats why I assumed that they were told too do exactly what they did as that did not happen on Saturday/Sunday

TON, you are my hero! The food banks must love you. Here I am all proud of myself on the 30 cans of soup I picked up and you put me to shame :). I just started stockpiling again, I was getting a bit slack. Shaws is doing a great job of keeping me motivated.

Thanks very much, T-O-N. I'm now thinking that the machine may not have been online. The store had a power outage during my trip. It came back on before I checked out, but I think it's highly probable that the CAT machine was still offline.

They are probably supposed to ask. Portsmouth always asks and pulls the hands behind their back crap, I just dig through my purse or make sure I am still putting stuff up there when they ask. If they want to make an issue I'll make a scene about them being pushy. Show me the rule that says I have to use it first or be polite to your customer, roflmao.

Both Portsmough and Dover are out of Warm Delights (or at least on the shelves and there weren't many when I went looking for 12). I decided to not draw attention to myself as both stores had noticed I'd come in twice already. Have to say they weren't bad, although I wish the minis were on sale as well.

My store in Dover-Foxcroft, ME told me that they have been asking for the card first because the registers have been crashing when the card is put in last. I believe her, since she is a 'couponer's friend' and would usually tell you to wait on the card to the end, so you could get more gas rewards.

I am surprised by all the hostility! I have never had a problem handing over my card at the start of the transaction.

They're talking about handing the card over either in the middle of a transaction or at the end.

On a side note to everyone, please keep this thread about the deals for this week. All other talk can be put in a new thread and titled as such. It gets confusing trying to weed through all the posts that pertain to the deals and those that don't.
