I went for the first time today and actually saw some good deals. They had more brand names than I expected along with lots of no brand things too. I had just come from my Tops grocery store where I paid $1.17 for 1# Blue Bonnet Margarine and Save a Lot had it for .79. I'll probably keep going there for napkins, detergent, etc. I didn't entertain looking at the meat because I'm fussy about that. It wasn't a disappointing trip!

We have 2 Sav a lots in the area where I live. I will buy meats at one but not the other. One you had to pay for bags and I dont like that but the prices are really good. If I dont have a lot of money for groceries, I will stock up there. Some paydays, I have to stay out of Walgreens and Krogers because I always wind up spending more than i planned. I really like the prices of their canned goods and I always stock up there. I will buy 2 cases of the vegetables we eat at a time usually once a month.

Our sav-a-lot had been one of the old, dingy, worn out buildings. But last year they built a brand new building to put it in. It's great! It's sparkling clean and very attractive. Plus, they have great deals on produce and meat, neither of which I'm likely to find coupons for. My only problem with them is that they're not visible from the road anymore and I forget to stop in, LOL.

Sav-a-lot can have some surprisingly good deals but you have to know your prices. This past week I went to both the Schnucks and a Sav-a-lot. Sweet potatoes at Schnucks were 3 lbs for $4. Sweet potatoes at SAv-a-lot were 79¢/lb. They are also good about marking down "oops" products. I got gallons of apple cider for 99¢ because the containers had a dented corner. YAY!! Also their soda (root beer) is ok in our book. If I can't find a sale on soda elsewhere, I buy theirs at the usual shelf price 2.19/12 pack. Could I do all my shopping there? No. But, if I have the time it is worth browsing.

I love it! The meat is always cheap than any other grocery store in town. The store is small and never crowded. I can always find deals even without coupons.

I really only stop in when I am out of Italian Dressing. We prefer their generic over Kraft and Wishbone! Weird huh? I get about 4 bottles at a time. Used to be .99 but now it's 1.19. When I am there for dressing I browse for things. Sometimes get bread or frozen stuff. Not impressed with meat or produce. This is the store in Hazleton, PA.

HAPPY DANCE Re: Convince me to try Save-a-Lot!

My theory with Save a Lot is to keep an eye on the monthly specials and "specialty items" (items they don't "normally" carry, but carry on a temp. basis periodically).
Save-a-Lot: special buys

Two summers ago, I faired very well when they offered the 4pks of Charmin as a "specialty item" for $1.00.
We got $1.00 off coupons in the PG insert and needless to say, I stocked up!!
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e.../random027.jpg
(The lrgr. pks are from CVS deals)

Bounty Basic is .85c per roll for the month of Sept. '08.
Combine that price with coupons :

---- Bounty paper towels $0.25/1 - Exp. 9-30-08 ~ Insert 8-31 PG
---- Bounty paper towels $1.00/2 - Exp. 9-30-08 ~ Insert 8-31 PG

I live in western NY - so our coupons are the $1/2.
So, that is .35c per roll after coupons....good "stock up price" if you need paper towels.
I'm perdy well set on paper towels for a few years, considering I've added to the amount that is shown in this pic :
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee6/Sherry3388/Stockpile%20Pix/SummerPix366.jpg

And the Mrs. Smith's pies (Apple of Pumpkin) are $2.99 for the month of Sept. '08.
Not a bad price!
And rumor has it that, inside the boxes of some of her pies, are $1.00 off coupons!
**If anyone buys some and can confirm the pkg. coupons, please post an update in this thread.

Hope this tidbit of info helps!

Huggzz ~

Sherry

I have a SavALot on the corner and I go there ALL THE TIME. The stores' condition varies. The one I shop at is immaculate. There are staff out all the time asking if you need help, putting out new produce and keeping the place very clean. As for the deals, you can't beat it and alot of the time I like the products better than name brand. For example I eat mostly vegetarian so I eat alot of canned beans and veggies. SavALot's canned beans are 100% better than Bush's beans. They are actually beautiful, if you can call beans beautiful. They do have name brands though and I have never bought anything bad there. I have bought things that were not tasty, such as an off brand of Wheat Thins. They tasted like cardboard. But I've never ran into anything spoiled. If you like Lean Cuisine, they have them there cheap. If you like Silk Soymilk, it's there cheap. The produce section at my store is fantastic. And they accept coupons!

I know a few people who refuse to go in the store but it's all in the mindset you take. If you're serious about saving money, give it a try.

We're getting one here next month. I'm anxious to see what it's like. Plus, my 18 year old applied for a job there, so I hope they hire him!
