Default Closing Genuardi's

Can anyone confirm this??? I know the Genuardi's at Glen Eagle and Newtown Square are closing, I was just at Glen Eagle and was told by the cashier. Then the man behind me said that he heard that all the Genaurdi's will be closing as their leases run out. I have to admit that I wonder any time I'm in the Kennett store how they are in business, there is never anyone shopping there.

I'm not too sad, they are over priced and I haven't gotten too many good deals from there in over a year, just the oatmeal deal this past winter and some cheap Goldfish.

Hi, I can confirm to you that both store you mentioned are closing including Chesterbrook too.
Edgmont (Newtown Square) Saturday, July 17th
Glen Eagle and Chesterbrook Saturday, August 21st
More will be eventually closing as their leases are up, but nothing has be mentoned yet. Only stores which are considered "red stores" will be closing. A "red store", obviously, is a store which is not profitable (in the red) where rent, electricity, employee wages, benefits, and other expenses overshadow what is being brought in by sales. All stores today considered a "red store" were once profitable 10 years ago and even up to 5 years ago. Genuardi's in Springfield, Wynnwood, Hershey Mills, Rockledge, St Davids, Roslyn and some others are profitable stores don't have to worry about closing when their lease is up. From the looks of it, most Genuardi's stores in a 10 mile raduis from the Philadelphia city limits will remain open and profitable, while Safeway will pull out stores from outside the raduis that are in the red. As for closing all the store, that is not going to happen. Why would Safeway close a store such as Wynnewood for example. The Wynnewood Genuardi's is the busiest of all Genuardi's stores, why would Safeway want to closed a profitable store? Again those three stores mention at the beginning of the post have been confirmed to closed and all employees have been notified and will be transfered to other Genuardi's.

I am around Chadds Ford, right between the Kennett store and the Glen Eagle store. We had our Kennett Acme close a few years ago, before I started couponing, so now we will only have Superfresh and Giant in Kennett, oh, and Walmart, but they don't carry much in terms of groceries:(

That's funny, because I heard a rumor that there was a Safeway opening in the old Acme building in Kennett, lol.

Like you Shannon, I've often wondered how that Genuardi's stays open. There's never anyone in there and it's terribly expensive. I shopped there many years ago when it first opened, wasn't owned by Safeway and it was quite nice. Of course in those days the Kennett Acme was a pit with crumbling floors, so that helped Genuardi's.

It's only another 6 miles down Route 1 to the Acme...........

And I read this in the paper a while back--

Superfresh applied to the township for permission to expand and renovate the store. Gah! It really needs it. But the article stated that SF felt it needed to expand in order to compete with Walmart, which is expanding and adding a grocery section.

If you go to the Kennett Paper's website and do a search, the article should come it, it was within the past 90 days.

Okkk in Norristown is supposedly the very first Genaurdi's but it smells...not kidding it smells like an old grocery store:( It is the one on the outside of Norristown on Main St. aka Ridge Pike.

There is another store in Eagleville it doesn't look busy often but is cleaner and the place we prefer to go.
There is also a nice one over on West Germanton pike which sees alot of action by Rte. 202

hmmm interesting...The Director of the boys preschool also worked at the Eagleville Genaurdi's wonder if she'd know if they were closing maybe I'll shoot her off an email...:)

I'm hoping the King of Prussia Genuardi's stays open. I've actually been shopping there way more than Acme or anywhere else. And, they have been lowering prices on many things. They used to be the most expensive, but honestly I think Acme has taken their place. Eggs are about 1.00 cheaper there than Acme as an everyday price and they are often on a supercoupon too. With Genuardi's offering store coupons, e-coupons, and double coupons, I can do really well there. Their produce is way (WAY) better than Acme and Walmart too. They certainly don't have the cat deals that Acme has, but the pros outweigh the cons for me. Oh yeah, and they also always offer help out to the car, which I almost always take them up on when I have my son with me!
