Returns (purchases using coupons)

Some questions about returns: does Safeway still get reimbursed from the manufacturer for the value of the coupons even when a customer returns the product? If so, shouldn't the customer be reimbursed the full retail value of the item(s) purchased when doing a return (as in cc or cash value paid plus coupon value)? I did a search but didn't find any answers. Just curious!

Yes, they still get reimbursed the full coupon value, and yes, you should get reimbursed the full price, including the value of the coupon, in cash.

Wow, heres something I never thought about.
I can understand that the store shouldnt make a profit on the coupon if the item is returned and the coupon value is not reimbursed too...but!...how can I buy an item for $1, get .50 off, return that item and get $1 back??
Neither way seems right.
