The Vanilla Visa gift card has a $4.99 activation fee I think. If I was to buy a $100 gift card and the fee and get a $20 up reward, this gift card may be a $15 MM. I could use that gift card to pay bills.
I was thinking the exact same thing, but was wondering if the gift card amount or just the activation fee counts toward the UP. Will be curious to see how that works. The Vanilla Visa gift card has a $4.99 activation fee I think. I purchased the $100 Vanilla gift card with the $5.95 activation fee and got the $20 up.
However, if you want to use this card to pay bills or make purchases online it is important that you register this card by entering your zip code first at www.vanillavisa.com before making purchases or paying bills, otherwise you won't be able to do anything online with it.
I write such long posts. Let's see if I can make it easier to read. Three questions:
How do we know you can only do the Vanilla Visa deal once? (I think the wiki says it's limit 1)
Does it have to be a $100 Vanilla Visa or will other denominations also count? (The picture shows others)
What did it mean on the bottom of receipts the last couple of weeks that our points would reset but our savings level would stay the same as of 1/1/12?
OK. That was the short stuff. Here's why I ask:
I was really close to making the 20% savings level. Because of what was written on the receipts, I ran in on New Year's Eve to use up the 2 $10 UP+s I had from the Centrum deal in December and to try to go over the 20% mark to lock in 20% savings for all of 2012. Is that what that message on the receipts meant?
I bought REPLACEMENT Sonicare toothbrush heads (note to self: this year make it easy to remember the 3 month replacement schedule - New Year's, April Fools, Fourth of July, Columbus Day). The Buy and Save ad just says Sonicare, but apparently its not just the toothbrush itself because between that and the Nivea deal (I got Sunday's MQs on Saturday), my receipt says I have $51 towards Resolution Rewards.
So, I only "need" another $50 to get my Resolution Rewards. If I can only do the deal once, I would be inclined to wait until the end of the month, see if I was short of the $100, although I don't see how I can be, the entire store seems to be included, and grab a smaller Visa Vanilla to hit the $100 mark.
If we can do the deal a couple of times, I think there will be a run on the Visa Vanilla cards and I'd better grab one early. Clearly the $100 card is the best deal.
THANK YOU!
For people who want an easy deal, buy the $100 gc to reach the requirements for the buy and save promo. It is a limit of 1. If you buy 2 $50 gcs, then you pay 2 activation fees, meaning that it makes more sense to buy just the $100. But if you already have $51 towards the deal, I'd wait like you said, and see what happens. I plan on doing this deal on Thursday and use the $100 for groceries this weekend. Then I can use the $20 +up on stuff at RA (since I currently have no +ups in hand!).
I wanted to address your question about the points. That message was simply stating that as of January 1, 2012 your points will be wiped out so you can start fresh earning more points for 2012 (well actually 2013). The way the program works is that whatever discount level you achieve in the previous year, that discount level will remain in the next calendar year.
For example, if you had 675 points in 2011 you were earning a 10% discount. Come 2012 you will still have a 10% discount but your points start at 0 for accruing towards discounts for the following year (so you will now be 1,000 points away from the 20% discount instead of 325 points away). If in 2012 you reach 1,000 points your 20% discount will become effective as soon as it registers and that 20% discount will remain in effect for the rest of 2012 and all of 2013. In 2013 you must reach 1,000 points again in order for the 20% discount to apply to 2014.
Unfortunately I don't believe purchases with up rewards count towards points, so if you were relying on that $20 in up rewards to get to 1,000 points and a 20% discount you will still remain at the 10% level.
I hope that is clear.
