"According to SF Weekly, the company will charge an extra 10 cents when Happy Meals are purchased.
But there's another catch. In the past toy collectors could buy the toys for $2.18, and pass on the meal, but no more. Now, in order to get the toy, people will be required to buy the Happy Meal as well.
Thanks to the new San Francisco law, it appears McDonald's will probably be making more money off their Happy Meals. "

According to this, people were once able to buy the toy and not get the meal. Now they HAVE to get the meal as well. I'm not sure the last line is correct though. They are claiming that McDonald's might make more money off their Happy Meals. I don't see how this is possible. If toy collectors could once just pay the cost of a Happy Meal, but not actually get the Happy Meal, then it would seem that they were once able to make $2.18 off the toy, and still have the hamburger, fries, and drink to sell to another customer. Therefore actually making MORE money by selling the same item twice. The only replacement needed is a new toy, and I bet the toy costs less than the actual meal.
They are charging 10 cents for the toy though, but that money goes to Ronald McDonald House charities, so I'm not sure if that would be considered McDonald's actually MAKING money. I don't know if purchases of Happy Meals previously included a percentage of donation to Ronald McDonald House charities either. If not, maybe the increase in donations can account for tax benefits, therefore reducing taxes owed, or increasing profits.
I guess one downside is now McDonald's will have to change from "Would you like fries with that?" to "Would you like a toy with that?" LOL!
