Here's a tutorial for the cuppy cakes. I made mine a little different, I used the Wilton mini ball pan to make the round tops. That seemed a lot easier (but more expensive) then the way they suggested. Then I covered it in fondant, and brushed it with luster dust. I used buttercream to attach that to a regular cuppy cake.

My ornament hangers were hand-shaped out of white fondant, and brushed with gold leuster dust. I thought they looked better then the ones they made.

HTH. If you ever attempt to make 'em and need help, LMK!!

ETA: Glad you like the site!! It's one of my favs!!

This is the one my friend just made for her son's airport/plane themed bday. I was soooo impressed. I'm trying to decide what I want to make for DD's bday next month. I was soooo disappointed with the cupcake cake I bought for DS's bday in May.

I DID NOT make this cake- but I bought the cakepan for it. (That was a total splurge!!) I did a trial run recently, and it's really cool! But I have my kids' birthdays both in September, you folks will have to wait till then to see the actual cake. One wants this octopus cake, the other wants an airplane cake. The cakepan can be found (here).

Love these!!! Okay stupid question. What is fondant? Their directions are not very detailed. I didn't know Wilton made mini ball pans. I would love to try this.

It's not a stupid question

Fondant is a clay-like material used in cake decorating often to give cakes (such as wedding cakes) a smooth surface or to make additional decorations with.

You can buy it premade, I know Wilton sells it at Walmart and other craft stores. I've never used the premade stuff, it is pricey and I've heard many people say it has a horrible taste to it.

I make my own. This is the recipe I use. It's not too expensive (in comparison), & you get a lot from the recipe. I've never flavored mine. Without flavoring it tastes kinda like cotton candy, and is good.

HTH

OK, these are the PINECONE cakes that I made for our wedding. They were in addition to the regular wedding cake (bakery bought) and 2 different kinds of cheesecake (I made those).

I used an egg-shaped pan, frosted them in chocolate, and used slivered almonds to finish.
