CHEF Looking for a vegetarian seasoning for beans

I worked with a vegetarian lady that cooked the best beans and soups and she used a vegetarian seasoning in them instead of bacon or ham. Does anyone have any idea what it might be?

I don't always have bacon or ham onhand to season and I am sure this would be better for you anyway.

Garlic? lol, at my house, we season everything w/ garlic!

I know there is a seasoning, but the name escapes me, and it tastes like a ham stock, but it's make w/o any animal products. Sorry, I can't think of it. I even bought it at my regular grocery - Meijer.

Do you have a Whole Foods or something similar nearby? I bet the staff there could point you in the right direction.

If you find it, please let me know!

    Vegeta, maybe?

Vegeta (food - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

My Romanian MIL swears by this, and I must admit it makes a great base for soups.

However, I never thought to try it in beans. I will try it next time!

P.S. if you need some Vegeta and you live near me in Washington, LMK! My MIL bought us a huge bag and I don't think we'll ever get through it....

By George, I think that is it ~ Vegeta~ Where in the world would I find it? Is it packaged in bags? Maybe with the spice area at the store? I have no idea. If you are in Washington state I am across the country from you.

My MIL makes hers with cumin, it gives them that "sausage" flavor.

Mrs. Dash makes a seasoning mix that is great for beans. Saltiness is the key for beans. They gotta taste salty... that is why bacon is so good in them. But if you are doing the vegetarian thing... Mrs Dash works well. Also Dry onion soup and liquid smoke.

Vegeta is usually found at European Food Stores.

Vegeta is the BEST! In fact, the other night I was bemoaning to Bexx about how they don't make Vegetarian Ramen noodles. Then I decided to throw away the "beef" packet and put in a bit of Vegeta. It was SOOOO GOOD.

Meagansmom, if you can't find any Vegeta, let me know. I'll mail some to you if you're not afraid of an open, dry food product that's been in tupperware in my kitchen.

Oh, I forgot to mention... it's pronounced vuh-gay-tuh. I used to pronounce it with a "J" instead of a "G", and my Slovenian boss corrected me. I tend to believe him since the product is made in his country!

For me- it doesn't matter to me if it is vegetarian or not. I just know that my coworker used a vegetarian powder/spice of some sort and it was good and seems like it would be easy to keep on hand. I am in the south and you know we like SEASONED foods!!! Gotta have that southern flavor.
