Publix has always lowered the tax amount from the coupons being used and that's what my totals reflected this week. Unlike Wags who charges tax based on precoupon totals.

Wonder if maybe it's something about food stamp users. They have always had to pay tax when they use coupons. They are penalized for using coupons.

My Publix crts still show the tax was lower than it should be.

IE,,,last night Publix in Hoover I purchased food, gmd/non food and hba.

    Items from several tax groups.

milk, snap ware, cough drops, crackers

    Bought $102.xx
    total oop paid 9.xx
(Cashier missed my $5 competitor q)
    4.xx of that was tax

    - If coupons had not subtracted out some of my tax - I would have paid over $9 in taxes for that transaction.

Alabama is a pre-coupon tax state. Publix usually takes their store Qs and competitor Qs off before tax.

I may have $900 worth of manufacturer coupons, but in AL you'll be paying tax on that $900. (TN is the same way).

What did you notice that was different?

PS. I need to shop with thickbluebug on great shopping!

At the publix I shop at in mccalla, al they were only charging tax on the items after q's but yesterday I noticed that there a charge for tax that I can not explain how they are doing it.
I bought 200 worth of stuff and I got back 3.24 but on my ticket it had A -8.56 and then it had tax 5.32. This is something I never seen before at my publix

You have to remember that manufacturer coupons are rebates from the manufacturers, making the whole purchase taxable (coupons are applied after the tax total). I glad I don't have to apply for these rebates by mail.

Where as the Store Coupons are price reductions made by the store, since the price is reduced there is less to tax (coupons applied are before the tax total).

In Florida us food stamp couponers are not penalized for using coupons. We don't have to pay taxes on food items, period. I can only assume that we don't have to pay tax on food items because it's already government money.

I haven't noticed an increase in coupon related tax (on anything, food or not) recently. I'm going shopping later today and I'll let you know if I notice anything out of the ordinary.

Well I am so sorry but I do not have any food stamps to use...even though food is so high I wish I did then I would not have to spent so many hours preparing for shopping trips to get things almost free free free.

Food stamps aren't vouchers for free food. It's money from the government for low income families so that we can eat. I still have to spend hours prepping for shopping trips so that I can stretch the money as far as I can. Also, in Florida food is very rarely taxed. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is soda.

Anyways, I went to the store the other day and didn't notice any change in coupon policy, so that's a relief. :)
