News PUBLIX – Atlanta ranking change again, Publix is no longer in the number 1 spot

    Atlanta Journal-Constitution

    Monday, July 26, 2010

”Through no fault of its own, Publix did not last long atop the grocery rankings in metro Atlanta.

It was just a month ago that Florida-based Publix completed a long climb to the No. 1 spot for market share, according to respected industry trade journal The Shelby Report -- a feat that prompted a page one story in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

But in the Shelby Report’s latest market share ranking, Publix tumbled back into the second spot, with longtime leader Kroger regaining first.

    What gives? …”

Kroger had some kick-butt sales this past month. Publix needs to step it up!

Publix needs to keep their shelves stocked when they have a decent deal. Many times I have gone to Publix in the past couple months and all the good stuff is gone. i.e. Noxema Razors, Fishers snacks, Emerald trail mix, Schick Hydro shave cream (both times) and the list goes on and on.

I think more people have started couponing and Publix can't keep their shelves stocked.

I am surprised they are 2nd... The one closest to my house is gross... They had a hoagie roll display w/ maggots and flies on the inside of all the bags, just this past Monday... I have been telling my hubby for months to drive the extra 6 miles (vs 2 blocks) if he wants something from Publix... He was so grossed out, that now he made me promise to never buy anything perishable from there. I have complained to corporate so much about the store for the past 4 years- that management glares at me when I go in the store... Yet- expired products are STILL all over that store. Rotten beef, moldy produce, corn chips 6 months past sell by date... Seriously gross :( Even the good publix has expired stuff 40% of the time- but they are horrified and take it off the shelves so I don't hold it against them (other Publix, put yogurt back on the shelf when I took it to customer service bc it was a few weeks past the sell by date!!).

The kroger one mile away, has seriously stepped up the past 18 months...Perfectly clean, 90% perfect produce, and it has been a yr since I found anything expired anywhere in there. Also- very coupon friendly!

One mile to a good kroger, 3.5 to a good Publix... Publix sales have to be really good to get me to drive the extra 5 miles (roundtrip).

W/ Atlanta traffic/roadwork- 1 mile equals 15 minutes ( much more if school busses are out!), so yes 5 miles matters, lol.

What area of Atlanta do you live in mum, and which Publix store have you had problems with? I live over in Kennesaw, and the Publix I shop at is always clean and I haven't had any problems.

The only problem I have had though is that a number of the sale items that have good coupons are completely out when I try to go ge them. So I am constantly having to get rainchecks.

I live on the southside of Atlanta (Peachtree City/Newnan area) and the Publix store closest to me is next door to the Kroger.

I used to religiously shop at the Publix but they have never been coupon friendly and 99.9% of the time will not put out the coupon booklets they get. I have to go to customer service and ask for them and they get miffed that I'm even asking. So Kroger has gotten 90% of my business lately.

I do like the Public B1G1F deals though. They usually have some useful items (at least for me) included.

The bad publix store is on the corner of baker/jiles rd... I really wish they would clean it up, I gave up complaining to corporate last yr, now I pop in every few weeks in hopes it is better. Three other publix stores w/in a 4 mile radius have always been clean.. All publix stores seem to have expired meat out on the shelves- a manager I was friendly w/ told me it is bc the meat is still good 3-4 days past the sell by date... Umm, no, it is rotten the day after ( maybe not rotten exactly, but it smells horrible and even my dogs wouldn't eat it)... I thought it was my fridge- got a new fridge, same problem... Switched to Ingles beef 6 months ago, and haven't even looked towards the publix meat dept since. Shame, bc I really like the publix employees at a few of the close publix stores:(

I have only been to the jiles/baker store a couple times and not at all recently; but, I have never had any problems with cleanliness or meat at the Wade Green store or the Rose Creek store
