They aren't making money on the Target coupons they take (or any competitor coupon for that matter) - they take those as a loss. What they are banking on is the fact that while you are in THEIR store using those Target coupons, you'll go ahead and buy your other products there as well.

I agree. Publix would MUCH rather you buy Target Q'd items at Publix. Publix has you in the store... what ELSE might you pick up while you are there.
I wouldn't worry about the $$ Publix is making as below is from the Publix.com site:

    General Information

    • 2010 retail sales of $25.1 billion

Thanks! I thought it was time for an update, since my old avitar was prior to DD#2 being born - and she's 18 months now!

not only that, but the profit margin may still be enough on that item that even with a target q they can make a couple of cents profit! but as genius marketers, they know that even if today you only buy 10 cans of soup and they lose 5 cents a can because of target q's (and they still give you great CS), you're so dang happy with them you'll be back all year buying buggies full of profit. it's all about you buying and even saving money in THEIR store, not Target's. That's why in a truly well managed store they compliment you on your savvy savings. Instead of that song "let the bodies hit the floor"... in retail it's "let the bodies hit the DOOR"! Sounds like some krogers should beware (not mine thankfully!)

Have any of ya'll ever worked as a cashier? These people make barely more than minimum wage to do a boring, repetitive job all day long. Just b/c the store has a policy does not mean they've been educated on it. And even if they have, who know's how long it's been since they've had to deal with that situation. So likely they forgot. What are you going to do, have them fired b/c they forgot? Get over it, be polite, and ask for a manager. It's not a big deal that some teenage cashier questions your coupons.

    DVW ~~

I've been a cashier for 7 years... 3 in high school, 4 in college (I wouldn't have been able to afford college any other way), but it WAS my job and I took it very seriously. Forgetting that a store takes select competitors (it isn't like the competitor list is 10+ long per store..more like 4 at most) is highly unlikely, as almost every shopper I see at my Publix has Target Qs....the other two competitors don't put out coupons.

I have a very close relationship with my store personnel. They may not know me by name, but describe me and they all know who I am. I always call them by name and take the time to say hello. I warned my store that if they didn't take Target Qs when they were deciding competitors, they might as well close the doors, as it's only another 8 miles to the next Publix that would take Target Qs.
