Default Is this new policy at Publix?

I was at Publix yesterday and had some coupons for $.50 off a $.75 item. In the past they have doubled and I got overage. This cashier blocked the double and said it was policy that if the doubled was for more than the item price they did not double. I asked why she could not adjust the coupon amount so there was no overage. She went and got a supervisor who also said it was policy not to double in these instances.

I have done this in the past so is this new or made up?

I have no problem with the coupon being adjusted but feel I should at least get the item for free.

Wanted to get feedback as to whether or not this is correct before writing a letter.

They made it up. Usually Publix lets coupons like that go through, no questions or problems but then you get a cashier or supervisor like that who don't allow it to double if it is more for the item. Some cashiers have a thing where if you get an item free, they think you are stealing it. I would just stay away from that cashier next time. :)

Publix policy is that you need to pay something when you walk out the store. Understandibly, they can't owe you money.

Probably would fall on deaf ears with the cashier, but I would let the front end manager know that unless the coupon says "Do Not Double", Publix (through the coupon clearing house) is reimbursed double the coupon by the manufacturer in accordance with the Publix double coupon policy. If they do not double the coupon for you, they will be commiting fraud by submitting the coupon and accepting the .50 you should have recieved.

If the manager doesn't understand how coupon reimbursment works, offer him/her the choice of either voiding the sale of the item and giving your coupon back or writing plainly on the coupon in bold print over the barcode that it was not doubled. Then suggest that they do a google search on "publix coupon clearing house".

:shrug7:The manufacturer prints the coupon to entice you to buy their product and pays Publix for doing so. How hard is it to understand?

That's interesting. Publix paid me 19 cents last week to take home over $20 worth of groceries.. I offered to buy something cheap to bring the total up, but the manager said their policy is pay the customer if the balance is negative.

I've been paid twice when using coupons and there has been overage by the manager of the store. I told him the 2nd time to stop adding in my coupons or I would have even received more back.

Now that makes sense. The front end manager at the store I shop told me different. Sure makes it hard when every one isn't on the same page.

If it is the Publix by Furman in SC you can contact Dave the district manager. I just went through that same thing two months ago and he told me that they do give overage.

I tried searching "publix coupon clearing house" and didn't come up with anything very useful. Could you suggest other search terms or a specific site that supports the above red section?

I was under the impression that Publix (and other stores that double coupons) does not get reimbursed for the "doubling" part. That is a service the store provides and pays for to keep customers coming to their store. I was pretty sure that this was part of their marketing strategy & budget.

I'd love to learn more about how Publix gets reimbursed for the "double" part of the coupon. Can you please provide me with more (reliable) information about this matter?

Manufacturers do not reimburse Publix for double coupons as far as I know. This whole "overage" thing is district dependent. The last I heard, Publix should never open a drawer to pay you money although exceptions may be made on manufacturer coupons as there will be reimbursement but never for Publix/competitor coupons.
