Why I Love Couponing at Publix
Growing up in the Midwest I was familiar with stores such as Farmer Jack, A&P, and Kroger. I had never heard of Publix until I moved to Georgia. Publix became my favorite store in a hurry. I find they have better produce than the other grocery stores in my area, and the meat is at a great price. Now that I’m a couponer, there are even more reasons to love Publix
Store coupons – Every two weeks Publix puts out an Advantage Buy flier. This flier always has several store coupons in it. Publix also puts out various other booklets of coupons throughout the year. Publix accepts a manufacturer coupon and a store coupon for each item which doubles my savings. Occasionally Publix releases coupons for a certain amount off a purchase. This seems to be a more common occurrence in Florida than in other states.
Competitor coupons – Publix accepts competitor coupons as if they were their own coupons. This includes coupons for specific products as well as coupons for a certain amount off a purchase. My area Publix stores will accept the Kroger coupons published in the Entertainment Book, printable Food Lion or Target coupons, Kroger or Target coupons mailed to my home, and so on.
Manufacturer coupons – Publix is a great source for manufacturer coupons. The Advantage Buy fliers usually have a few manufacturer coupons in them plus Publix puts out other booklets of manufacturer coupons throughout the year. SmartSource maintains “blinkie” coupon machines in Publix stores. Tearpad and other coupons can often be found at Publix as well. Publix doubles manufacturer coupons up to $0.50 everywhere but Florida.
Mail-in Promotions – As if the store coupons and manufacturer coupons aren’t enough, Publix generally has several mail-in promotions during the year. For example, a recent promotion required the shopper to purchase four different Kraft products and $50 worth of groceries to earn a $10 Exxon/Mobil gas card. Many of the promotions allow a family to get multiple rewards per household by mailing the required materials together to the redemption center. Other recent rewards were Publix, Home Depot, and JC Penney gift cards.
Mystery penny item – Every Sunday and Monday Publix offers the mystery penny item in stores outside Florida. If the customer brings in the coupon from the Sunday paper, she is entitled to buy one of the mystery items for $0.01 with a purchase of $10 or more.
Half price BOGO – At Publix stores outside Florida, items that are on sale for buy-on-get-one-free (BOGO) scan as half price. There are disadvantages to this system, but there are also advantages. One advantage is that the customer can buy an odd number of items and still receive the discount. Another advantage is that redeeming a BOGO raincheck during a BOGO sale will result in a 75% discount on the items compared to regular prices.
Non-expiring rain checks – Publix rain checks do not expire.
Magazines – Publix publishes several magazines with useful articles and recipes. These magazines can be found in the store or be home delivered. The Greenwise Market magazine focuses on healthy living. It usually contains a few coupons for organic or natural foods. The Family Style magazine focuses on families with children. The Grape magazine is about wine. These latter two magazines occasionally have coupons as well.
Baby Club – Publix has a baby club for new or expecting parents. They send out sheets of store coupons three or four times a year. Many of these coupons are free item coupons or buy-one-get-one-free coupons.
Customer service – As a couponer, my transactions don’t always go smoothly. Publix has great customer service. They also have a scan right guarantee, The Publix Promise, which says that if an item scans wrong, the customer is entitled to one of the items for free.
