Can you tell me if the organic milk has a longer expiration date than regular skim? I was thinking I read that somewhere but may be completely wrong. I would pay $3 for organic milk.....I am slowly trying to convert us to organic, so far I have managed most fresh fruit, yogurt, some meats but haven't tried the milk yet.

    TIA
Hey, this topic took on a life of it's own . I figured it needed it it's own thread.

Anyhoo, the organic milk has extremely long expiration dates compared to regular milk. I don't have the freezer space, but I can still stock up and store the milk in my refrigerator.

going slightly ot- Breakstone's cottage cheese doubles were 1.25 today! The usual price used to be .99 so it always beat the sale prices at W/D & Albies.

Now when I bought some of the Org Valley milk the other week, the shelf life was the same as the regular milk.. about a week and a half out.

Rice milk. Now I would have never thought of that. You said you made it. How? Does it taste like processed cow's milk?

I was seriously thinking about getting a goat today. Funny thing, it was before I saw this thread. We grew up on fresh goat's milk and powdered milk and liked it just fine. Course, now it may take some getting use to. I've looked at buying powder milk and it seems a bit expensive to me. I haven't figured out the price difference between it and regular cow's milk, but maybe I should. I would love to know how you made your own rice milk though, might be worth a try.

Wow. The closest one to me is 25 miles away. I wonder if it would be worth it, to drive down once a week to stock up. I do freeze mine when I can get them on sale and doesn't seem to hurt them a bit. In answer to a previous post the milk seems to last as long after freezing it, than if I hadn't.

The Organic Valley is the best deal at $3 per gallon after coupons. There is the $1/1 Organic Valley Publix store coupon in "All American Savings" yellow flyer, and $1/1 mfr in the "Go Organic for Earth Day" Publix booklet.
That's the best I'm going to get in my area.
Thanks for the info. I may try this myself. I'm just a bit chicken when it comes to trying new things that are good for me.

Powdered milk at Publix is 7.99 last I purchased (last week). I did the math on it a few months ago and it came out about even with regular milk @ 3.99.

    These are so fun!

I am ALL undecided on what to do about milk. For a while we stopped eating cereal (so much milk wasted!) but cereal is hard to pass it up when it's free. Most of our milk goes into cereal and coffee, two things we could probably give up or at least cut down a lot. I think that's going to have to be our solution. No more cereal, no matter how cheap it is, and either black coffee or switch to tea or something (oh no!!!)

This morning I actually strained the kids' cereal and saved the milk for my coffee and for baking. It was local grassfed $10/gal milk, and no way was I pouring it down the sink!! (I don't get that all the time - it was a splurge. A very tasty splurge.)

I gotta admit the Organic Valley deal is suh-weet, with the half and half costing 19 cents until those coupons run out!!

Your kids won't drink the milk after the cereal is gone? My DH and DD will drink the milk after the cereal is eaten.......granted I put up with loud slurping sounds (they have a contest on the weekends to see who can slurp the loudest ) but there is no wasted milk!

    Wow......$10/gallon grassfeed milk?!

I have the same problem. Not only do they leave the milk in their bowls, but yesterday I found 3 glasses of half empty milk. One of them was in the fridge for later. But wasted none the same, as it would not have gotten drunk.

I made the mistake of getting DH some of the Smart Balance 1% whe it was on sale and I had a coupon... Now it's all he wants! At $3.59 (was $3.49 ,up this week) a half gallon, and he can drink it in a day, I'm scouring the shelves for the one's with the coupons! Plus now DS is drinking Lactaid... And they wonder why I cringe at the dairy aisle.

My kids & DH are the only ones in the house that eat cereal. Unless I get some fabulous deal on sugary cereal, we don't go through milk all that quickly. No one in this house drinks it plain, it's only for cereal. But it's still ridiculously high priced. I think I need to buy a cow and learn how to milk it. Especially if I can sell it for $10 per gallon.

    These are so fun!
