    Default HELP! flea infestation

    I HATE THOSE BOOGERS!!!!

I have 2 dogs, a mini schnauzer and a chihuahua. They are currently on K9 Advantix monthly. Doesn't work. We've tried Frontline. (for several years) didn't work.
I just had a spray the house with some crap. It works for an indoor infestation. After I vaccuumed and sprayed down the house I went to work on the dogs. First I washed them with Dawn then flea shampoo. THEN I took the flea comb and combed out the rest of the little flea bodies. I shaved both dogs as short as possible without them being bald. Then I we went outside and I sprayed them down with vinegar. I read online that fleas hate vinegar (so do me and the dogs!!!). I also sprayed their bed with vinegar. I sprayed around the house with a lemon mixture. I also read they hate that online. The vinegar works but NOT THE LEMON.

OK well that was about 2 weeks ago and I am still find fleas on the dogs.

    What do you use????

Oh my goodness that sounds like a nightmare. I have a little pug and she is 2 yr old and never found any flies on her little body. I think I give her frontline some months and k9 others. You seem like such a great caring pet owner. Wonder why you are having so much trouble with flies with your dogs. My friend is watching my dog next wk well on cruise. I am so nervous because she doesn't put flie And tick meds on them once a month. I guess she doesn't have money because she has 3. I hope my dog won't Get any from hers. I am going to put her meds on her the day before she leaves.

you need to keep bathing the dogs for at least 6 weeks. remember the eggs will hatch here and there.

now since you are in nc, you probably dont get frost like we do here which makes the little buggers die.

have you treated the outdoor area where they can get fleas too? borax will work or if you can get pyrethian (all natural bug spray) for the yard and use that. again, remember the eggs will hatch so you should do it again in two weeks.

do you have neighbors that have animals? your dogs might be getting them from those animals

do you have any wild animals getting in your yard or trying to take up home in your yard? raccoons and possums can carry fleas too.

if your dogs are still getting them, my guess is they might be coming from another source.

I pretend to mushrooms. It makes it so much easier to kill them.

We use the advantix on our dog and we never had them, about a week ago, we found some on her. The vet said the fleas are horrible this year and that alot of people are having problems with them. I sprayed our whole house and I have either cooked (in the dryer) or froze anything that can possibly be put in the freezer or dryer. I hate those little boogers!

my sister had a flea problem for awhile and it is awful, this is the funny part. I have a hairless cat that they were babysitting and you could see all the fleas on her. it was really kind of gross. my poor cat. I think they used flea powder and had to wash all their stuff in hot water.

spraying the yard would help but not fully solve the problem. We walk the dogs around the block twice a day and they're constantly coming in contact with other dogs. That explains why the problem is so much worse than it was at our old house. There the dogs just ran outside and came right back in. As for wild animals we have a ton of squirrels. thats it.

yea the hairless thing didn't have the effect I was hoping for. But they are a lot easier to grab on a hairless animal.

you might want to take a different route..or avoid dogs...they are probably picking them up along that route.

or since they are smaller, bath them weekly in flea shampoo or dawn. this might help keep it at bay enough.

i know i have heard that borax soap will kill the fleas. use it dry and sprinkle on their bedding etc and then after a few vacuum it up. which would then in turn make sure that it kills any fleas you might of vacuum'd up.

When you bathe the dogs the fleas will tend to jump in their ears. So try putting cotton in their ears so they can't do that.

I no longer have a dog. Just cats. When my one cat had fleas, I took her out to the groomer for a bath while I bombed the house. I had to repeat this some time later because the eggs will hatch. But mostly I just kept the cat in the house. I realize that you can't do that with dogs.

    Good luck!

Do you by chance have Pine Tree's? Fleas LOVE them? If, Yes, you will have to keep on top of raking the needles up and BURN them if you can. During the winter months they will hybernate in the needles, then once it starts warming up they go on vacation to any little opening around your house and they will attach themselves to your pets as well as you to get inside.

    Good luck, Louise
