    Problem with my cat

My cat Sunny is a 1 1/2 year old male cat. About 5 months ago he started spraying in the house and in April I took him and got him neutered. Well now he is peeing everywhere in my house. I dont understand why. His litter box is always clean and he gets lots of attention. Any suggestions? I am at the end of my rope with him, we love him so much but can not take thhis anymore.

I am pretty sure I've read/heard that once they've started spraying they will usually continue to do so even after neutering. I think the best chance to not have that happen is to get the neutering done as soon as possible (obviously too late for you but FYI for anyone else). That said, I hope you don't get rid of him for this; he is only doing what is natural to him.

I am not 100% certain about these things though; you might want to do some googling about it.

It's possible he could have urinary issues. It isn't uncommon for cats to urinate outside of their litter boxes when they have urinary system infections. It's worth a trip to the vet to check things out. Although, it is totally possible this is just a male cat thing too... I feel for you, that stuff stinks!!

My cat did this when she was pushing 18 and her kidneys failed. Prior to that I got her an extra litter box and put it near where she was sleeping.

Just to be sure you should take your cat to the vet and see if there is any problem.

But more likely it is as the other poster said. A male thing. I have never had a male cat and have heard that they do spray. I can't say for sure if this is true or not. But for this reason I was always afraid to get a male cat.

I also know that once they have urinated in one spot they will keep doing it unless/until all of the urine is gone. So get yourself a black light and check for urine. Then use something like Urine Gone and clean every place where he has peed. You might also want to get at least one more litter box, depending on the size of your house.

First thing is definitely to take him to the vet to check for a urinary tract infection or crystals in his urine. If those are negative, you can probably ask the vet to try some prozac. It's super inexpensive for pets and I even have one of my male cats on it for urinating outside the box.

I am very impressed with the answers so far, but here are some other thoughts:

YES to ruling out a urinary problem. Our oldest male developed a UTI at the same age as your cat, so it can happen in young cats.

Try a Feliway diffuser. This product was designed specifically to reduce cat spraying.

Add another litter box in another location. Some cats prefer two boxes. You might even try another brand/type of unscented litter to see if that helps. Can't hurt.

When using the enzymatic cleaner, read the directions. You generally need to use a LOT and let it soak really well. That's how the enzymes work.

I'm sorry this is happening to you and I hope you can get it resolved.

Second to the previous posters suggestion to try a different litter. My friend's 5-year-old female cat started peeing all over the apartment, she took her to the vet and after UTI and other medical problems were ruled out the vet suggested changing the litter brand/type. After trying out a bunch of different kinds she finally found one that worked, now her cat only very occasionally pees outside the litter box.

Out of curiosity...do you have more than one cat or recently added a new cat to the family? I know sometimes cats will begin to spray/mark their territory especially if they have to share a litter box. In addition, I recently heard about a study being done at UNC or NC state (one of those) where they are treating cats that spray with prozac or xanax. It has shown some progress in reducing the frequency of occurrence. Just a thought if all else fails.

He is the only cat...and very spoiled. I have tried numerous cat litters he continues to do it. I just dont know what to do. Maybe I will call the vet and see what they recommend.

You received several ideas from people concerned enough to make those suggestions!
