We spay/nueter, although, like summermay's neighbors, we had 2 cats give birth 3 days apart last summer. All of the kittens that have been born into the family have been taken to a local pet store, expect for 1 that died (he got under the recliner and I rocked on him~didn't know he was there :( and we kept 1). One fo the cats, had another litter last winter. So in total, 14 went to homes. I can't say they were good home but if someone's going to pay $20 for a kitten from a pet store, I figure that have to be decent people.

Both our kitties are from shelters and we adopted them as babies and they are both fixed. One was already neutered, the other was too young. We had to put an extra refundable $50 up and sign something saying we would spay her when she was big enough (had to be 3 pounds and she was only 2.3 pounds) and we would get our money back.

I don't know if it is just an old wive's tale, but I have heard that if you don't neuter a male cat before he learns to spray, he will continue to spray even after fixing. So I definitely neutered all my males immediately. Too soon was not soon enough! lol! I just don't have the desire to find out if it is true.

For all you who take in abandoned/stray pets to get them fixed, I admire you. I don't know if I could do what you do. We don't have many strays in our neighborhood due to the coyotes. :(

My new kitten just got fixed a few weeks back, my lhasa apso got fixed when he was a puppy and my shi tzu is not fixed, when we first got him we were going to breed him, but never found him a girlfriend... all of our animals are indoor our cat never goes outside and our dogs only go out to go to the bathroom or play ball with us. we dont even have a yard (we live in an apartment) so we are not too worried about gus causing any unwanted litters.

Of course! Every animal we've had has been spayed or neutered. I get so sad when people don't spay or neuter because they want their children to witness the "miracle of life" or whatever.. they need to go to shelter and see how often the miracle of life leads to misery.

We also spay/neuter :D We recently lost our fur baby of 14 yrs :( I just couldn't stand not having any little ones around, so we got 2 babies (each about 4 months old) from our local shelter. There you have to sign papers agreeing to spay them and have shots and any medical care they need, or else they will send the cops out to take them away and sue you for $400! We would have done all those things anyway, but just the threat led us to believe that some people wouldn't, kwim. The pissy thing is that the fee for getting them spayed was built in to the adoption cost, so there is absolutely no reason NOT to have it done! I guess some people are just irresponsible and/or lazy!
Our local Humane Society will also spay/neuter ferels for $10 and give them shots for like, $5 more. Everytime we get a stray that stays here long enough to catch, we find out when the next clinic is and take them to be fixed :D Just like Bugface said, way too many are put to sleep!

Not all shelters force you to fix the animal when you get them we got our cat from the pound paid 10.00 and they handed him over, we only had to have our lease to prove that we put the pet deposit. We chose to take him in and get him fixed, even though he is an indoor only cat, we didnt want to deal with the spraying and him trying to get out this spring/summer. but I dont have any desire to fix my shi tzu there really isnt any reason too, unless the vet tells us that it is necessary for health reasons why else do I need to fix him?

Both my dog and cat are fixed. Since we got the dog from the Humane Society she was already fixed. I took my cat into be fixed and when I went to pick up up they said she was already pregnant but only a few days pregnant. It cost $15 extra since they had to terminate the pregnancy.

I strongly believe in spay/neutering, although we have not fixed our new kitten who lives inside or our dog who lives inside as well.

Our outside cat is spayed.
