We have to put our dog down today

I've never had to deal with this before, and I didn't realize how hard it is. A big part of me knows that he's not going to get better, and he's just suffering, waiting for us to make the decision. Another part of me just wishes he'd suddenly get better, start eating, and running around the yard like he used to. But...he's about 10 years old, so that's not going to happen. Over the past few weeks, his appetite has gone down, to the point that he won't eat anything at all now. The only thing he is consuming at this point is water. He doesn't want to come in the house, and just lies out in the yard. If he gets up to move to another spot, it takes him forever to get there. He has no energy at all.

My husband and I discussed it this morning, and I called to make the appointment for this afternoon. I'm crying as I type this. My daughter is coming home to visit on Sunday. I haven't told her yet.

Soxx...you've been a great dog. I hope we made your life as happy as you made ours. We'll miss you.

I'm so sorry. I have tears in my eyes as I'm typing this. Our boy is 8 years old now, I dread the day when we will have to make the same decision as you.

I'm so sorry. It's really hard, I know, I've had to do the same thing for a family cat. Hang in there.

I am SO sorry Carol. That must be awful to go through. I don't have a pet currently but I remember when my childhood doggie passed, I was so sad. {{{HUGS}}} You can come cry here anytime!

Carol i know how you feel. We too did this almost 7 yrs ago. It was not easy to do but it was the best thing to do. Still to this day i have never loved another dog. We have a dog now but it's just for the kids. I am not that attached to it.

Has he been ill or did this just come up suddenly? I am really sorry you and your family are having to go through this.

I'm so sorry - I have had to do that twice in the past and it's one of the hardest things ever. **hugs** At least you know he will no longer be in the pain, that is what you have to keep telling yourself. I'll keep you and your doggie in my prayers.

I can truly sympathize with you here....we just found out our 3 yo has lymphoma and I am dreading the day we have to put him down. It is sad to have to watch them decline and the last thing you want is for him to suffer ! He is better off going to the "Rainbow Bridge" even though it doesn't seem fair and is very emotional to do! I'm so sorry to hear that. I have two dogs, and one of them is a mix of two large breeds, and sometimes I just look at him and know that he isn't going to be with us for too many more years. I had tears in my eyes as I read your post because I can understand how difficult this decision must be for you. As another poster said, try to remember that it's best for the dog. I'm sure you provided a wonderful life for him. Otherwise, I have a feeling you wouldn't be so heartbroken about the decision to put him down. You will all be in my prayers.
