CHAT What brand food do you feed your dog and WHY?

I went to the Mid Michigan Women's Expo today and got a few samples of Evo dry dog food and tried it out on my dogs, who inhaled it. I compared the ingredients of Evo to the Natural Balance I currently feed them. The ingredients in Evo are pretty superior to NB, and I am considering switching them. The prices are pretty similar: $11.99-14.99/5lb bag of NB to $15.98/6.6lb bag of Evo.

That got me wondering, what do other people feed their dogs, and WHY?

I am considering switching because I can read more of the ingredients in Evo and know what they are. Their list of ingredients is a lot better than NB, though NB is still a decent food. Plus, Evo's manufacturer does not use ethoxyquin as a preservative. I avoid NB formulas that have salmon, fish, and ocean meal because their manufacturer, Diamond Pet Foods, DOES use ethoxyquin to preserve those formulas. What I have read about it makes me leary and I'm just not willing to take that chance on my dogs. They've tried Solid Gold Little Bits before and loved that too. I loved how the pieces were teeny tiny for their mouth, but, alas, it contains salmon and ocean meal and is manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods.

I used to feed Iams and Mighty Dog and if you've read my previous posts about MD, then you know why I switched. I can definitely see changes for the better when I've upgraded their food. I've changed over the past year and quality is more important to me than price.

So, what brand do you feed your dog, and why do you choose that brand?

I feed my pets Science Diet. I live in TOpeka and my ex worked there. I've been in the plant (the main plants/headquarters are here). The food is so much healthier. It's AMAZING how precise they are with everything they do with their food and testing. They feed every dog they have there, different foods, same quantities each day, time scheduled, the testing is extensive (not a mean way) but by weight, blood work, etc. The ingredients are people quality, REAL meat, chicken etc. I know it's expensive but it's REAL food, REAL quality and there is no comparison health wise to any other brand...if that's important.

One other thing I love about Hills, it's they have great play centers for their pets, etc, they walk each one every day, and let them play. Great company, great food, and since I know many of the employees....great employees as well. ALSO....I know that here....not sure about other vets, if you're NOT feeding SD currently you can get a free bag, they just have a sign in sheet, and you can get it for your cat or dog. May be a local thing, but worth asking your vet so you can test for free :)

I know some will never pay the price, but in all honesty, you don't feed your pets as much as the store brands, simply because of the nutrients, one or 2 cups a day...so when you consider you feed pets triple the amount of other foods, it all equals out.

There is also a 3 bag challenge out there. with $5 off coupons for each bag you buy, and after you complete the 3 bags. You get a $15 off rebate q.

No I don't work for Hills...sure sounds like it...but Science Diet is the Best and I've been a firm believer for years in this product since I've seen first hand.

Diamond. When we picked out our second dog several years ago, hubby asked the breeder what he used as all his adult animals seemed healthy and strong. We get it at Tractor Supply and for less than IAMS.

We feed our dogs Chicken Soup for the Dog's Soul. We switched over from Iams after some research.

my dog's went from bil jac food, too a all natural brand (i cant remember the name but we got it at the health food store)....i didnt care for either because they gave him really bad gas.
since couponing, i give them a mixture of whatever i get..i never buy the generic brand...usually purina, eukanuba, science diet and now purina pro plan....i have a container that fits 45 lbs in it...oh yeah pedigree is in my stash now too...
i have found that since i started couponing, i am getting a better quality of food then before....i had a huge stock of eukanuba natural last year and science diet...
my dog has bad hips from years of work (yup he had a job) and he gets those glucosamine (i know i spelled it wrong) pills with his food....but as far as his health, the vet says he is in great health for his age...he is 12 and still going strong

We feed Taste of the Wild for the 3 younger dogs and Chicken Soup for the Senior for our oldest dog (though she gets the food the other dogs gets sometimes too). We currently have all the varieties of TOTW and the Chicken soup sitting in our pantry.

We feed TOTW b/c we have one dog with sorta bad allergies and she does SOOO much better on a grain free food (which Taste of the wild is). Her shedding and itching has almost stopped. Plus all the dogs just love the taste. They are members of the family and I think they deserve human grade ingredients.

I would NEVER feed any dog food that you could buy at a grocery store or Walmart, unless I just could not afford anything else. All the brands of pet food that can be purchased at places like grocery stores and Walmart are CRAP. Even 6 yrs ago when I was broke and btwn jobs I lived on easy mac so I could afford to buy my dog Chicken Soup dog food. It wasn't the best, but it was the best I could afford.

We use Natural Balance. However, we have heard that Before Grain (I think) is good. Has anyone ever tried this? I am open to changing, we love our little boys :)
