Default How Much is too Much?

This is going to be kind of a strange question

I feed my cat a bowl of dry food in the morning (I never measure, but I would guess it to be a 1/2 cup of dry food) and a half can of wet food at night. Lately he seems to be hungry all of the time and whines constantly...so I'm wondering, should I be feeding him more?

    Thanks in advance!

It would depend on his weight for one thing. I feed the wet food morning and night and keep dry full all the time. But, my cat does not gorge herself on it either. I know some people need to ration out food or the cat will stuff themselves silly.

Take your kitty to the vet. If how you feed your cat is the norm, and he/she has never behaved like this before, then I would take my cat to the vet. Just to be sure there is nothing wrong with it. Is your cat an indoor/outdoor cat? If it is eating mice/birds/etc, it may have contracted tapeworms which affect a cat's digestive system.
Good luck. I hope your kitty is healthy.

ITA. It's possible she has something like a thyroid problem, which would cause her to want to eat more. Have some bloodwork done and bring a stool sample.

Just found out my cat has an overactive thyroid. She eats and eats and eats and gets skinnier.
Just started her on a medicine to help with this. She seems to like it-hope it helps.

Yesterday before I went to work, I just got sick of listening to him whine so I put more food in his bowl, and when I got home from work most of it was still in there, and he hasn't whined once (except when he knew it was "supper" time with wet food, then he got crabby, he loves his wet cat food ). So I've been keeping his bowl full of dry food for the past 24 hours, and he has been back to normal (thank goodness!) and he hasn't gorged himself silly on it like I thought he would. He just nibbles at it here and there....so I guess all he needed was the freedom to snack, lol!

Thanks for all the great suggestions, if he goes back to whining after a few days, I will most definetely take him to the vet and get things checked out! reps to all!

I'm glad to hear that your kitty is okay and back to normal and that it was a quick fix. So much better than an expensive trip to the vet. I also leave a full bowl of dry food for my cats to nibble on during the day.

I have to leave my cat's bowl full 24/7 or she will get into my cabinets and eat my real food, lol. I learned this the hard way a few times! I thought she didn't need to eat all the time but she thinks so because she gets into the cabinets and opens boxes of food, bags, etc and eats, eats, and eats, lol. Now I leave her food readily available and she doesn't need to steal from me. and for some reason she isn't as hungry, it's just like a person with an addiction she needs to feel safe that she has her food if she wants it. That is how I am with my stockpile, I eat less now knowing I have the food than when I didn't have my stockpile.
