Feline Pine is the name brand, but Petsmart has their own store brand which runs a bit cheaper. Pine pellets are also the same thing as pet bedding for rodents, even horses. We used to live in country in a very rural area, and I would go to the farm store & buy horse stall bedding -- it is exactly much the same thing but larger sized pellets (Equine Fresh is one brand name). It works the same if your cat doesn't mind the big pellets. And talk about cheap. Something like 40 lbs for $6 (at least where I was). I did think that it broke down a bit faster, but I assume that was due to the pellet size, and they pellets didn't seem to hard/packed as the type made specifically for cats.
Pine litter lasts much longer, is MUCH healthier for your cats, and goes back to the environment, and comes from a renewable resource unlike the clay litter. It's just pine wood. No chemicals or anything artificial.
The biggest change that is very noticeable, is that there is no cat litter box smell in the house. We had tried every brand of clay type litter, and they have odor/freshener additives which is gross (to us), then add urine or feces smell to that & you have a very noticeable cat box. We love the Feline Pine type litter because there is absolutely NO odor to it (of course with no poop in the box -- have to scoop the poop). I guess if you call the smell of "wood" an odor, there is one, but it it not noticeable to us or DH who is highly sensitive to odors/perfumes/etc. We also have less tracking with the pine litter. If some of the litter comes out of the box, it's in the larger pellet form, which for me is much easier to pick up that the tiny bits of clay litter (at least for me).
We have 2 cats, and a 25lb bag ($10?) lasts us a couple months.
I have also used Wheat Scoop, and a similar litter made from corn cobs, but they both track more (have a fine texture). But they were great as far as no odor, healthy, and super eco friendly.
note: i have never tried the silica gel (crystal) cat litter.

We usually use Tidy Cat. Seems to work ok. | The bed is a thing where the cat is telling you "This is YOUR fault." Mine have done it when I've gone on vacation and left them with my mom (I was in college and lived with her at the time). Came home to poo on my bed.
Before we got the cat genie (EXPENSIVE, but worth it to us, cat "toilet" that flushes all waste down the drain) we preferred scoop away.
What we like about the cat genie: no scooping (does it itself from 1-4 times a day depending on what you choose). We can leave for a couple days and the box is still taken care of.
What we don't like: the plastic pellets for litter get tracked EVERYWHERE. There are times when it gets a little stinky (we usually jsut run an extra cycle then), and about 1 or 2 times a month, it gets clogged with some kind of string the cats found and ate and hubby has to take it awaprt and clean it. Also, the supplies are about $60 every 2 months (sanitizer solution and pellets).
We currently have 4 cats and 1 box, so that can be a challenge. One of the cats isn't ours, though...just cat sitting for SIL while their house is on the market. When it was just our 3, they have apparently worked out a schedule between them. LOL! |

Same as Feline Pine, but with smaller pellets that seem to break apart better. They also have a frequent buyer program... for every 5 bags you buy, you mail in the UPCs and get a coupon for a free bag.
Have you tried the special litter box for Feline Pine? Trying to decide if it is worth the $20.... |
