Default Re: Does anyone own a Newfie?

I just switched my Terrier to a grain free brand called Taste of the Wild. I found it at Tractor Supply it was about $24.00 for a 15 lb bag. It is expensive! Another member mentioned pet mart? as a source for this food as well. It looks like I will be spending about $50.00 monthly on the better food. But if you compare prices its not that much more that science diet or Iams or one of those other pricey foods and this is grain free.

Check out dogfoodanalysis.*** It has alot of info on dog food. I personally feed Tyson (1yr old boxer, 60#) Taste of the Wild. He absolutely loves it. I stay away from the fish variety as they can't/won't confirm what they use as a perservitive. There is a perservitive called exthoxyquin that can cause cancer. It runs about $41-$42 for a 30# bag here in PA. Tyson eats between 2-3 cups a day.
Wellness is another really good food. They don't use ethoxyquin at all in their food, along with BHT and there is another perservitive.
The webiste above is a great resource. I have spent many, many hours looking into canine digestive tracts and what is best for them. Feel free to PM me if you have any kind of questions.

Default Re: Does anyone own a Newfie?

I work at a vet's office where a very good client of ours has three Newfies. They all three are VERY calm and VERY easy to work with! They all get their beauty days at the doggy spa next door every 8 weeks or so.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep them at a healthy weight!!! They are already so prone to hip and knee problems, adding an extra 20-40lbs will certainly not help! Our loveable client learned that the hard way, and in the past two years:

- 2 have had double knee surgery
- 1 had single knee surgery
- 1 has elbow issues
- all three are on Adequan (do you know how much Adequan costs, and how quickly a 160lb dog goes thru a small vial?!?!)

So, what a LOVELY breed to be around and work with, but they are a lot of maintenance! :) Good luck!

TBE how great is it to work with animals all the time. What is your favorite breed of dog? Thanks for the Newfie advice.

LOL, hands down my fav are Labs. :) But I've grown up with them and might be a tad biased. ;)

Working at the vet's has really helped me personally. I used to think Yorkies were froo-froo dogs who didn't know they were dogs, Chihuahuas are biters, Pits are nasty, and Dobies would eat me. While many of our more infamous clients fit those stereotypes to a "T", I have run into a fair amount that have proved me wrong. ;) I now own a very laid back sweet Chi, a co-worker shows Pits at dog shows and they are the HAPPIEST NICEST dogs I've ever met, and I fostered a 90lb Dobie who was a saint!

But in the end, I think the hardest ones to deal with most of the time are the OWNERS. Hee hee!

I have a Chihuahua too! She's never growled, bit anyone or even snapped! She's 14 now and is more of a throw pillow on the couch then a dog. She's the sweetest most loving little dog I've ever known! I agree with you about the owners!!!!!
