Upside down plastic forks in the area you don't want the cats. It's worked everytime for me.

I bought cheap cayenne pepper, paprika, chili powder etc, anything hot or spicy and mixed it all together (use gloves) and sprinkled it all in and around my flower beds. It worked well until it rained a couple of times.
I care for feral cats and it can really get smelly. Some of the cat organizations will have traps you can borrow. The one I am working with now is paying for all my cats to be spayed and neutered. I just have to trap them and get them to the vet.
I hear diametrious earth? (spelling) the food grade can be sprinkled on the grass to kill fleas. You have to wear a mask when applying. It is very expensive about $30.00 for a small bag of 3 lbs or so.

You could try to find a cat rescue to take them.

This is a great idea. I might use it for some of the 'critters' I don't want digging up my seeds in the spring!

I have buried chicken wire under mulch and that seems to help.

That sounds like a good idea with the "poultry netting" I may have to try that. When I asked a young employee if they had chicken wire she said no but they do have poultry netting!

These feral cats use the mulch in my flower beds and use my garden! I used the hot pepper mix and that worked well but you have to keep reapplying it.

My neighbor across the street puts hot sauce all around his lawn to keep the dogs off it, I would assume it would work just the same for cats.

I have heard of slicing oranges and lining the edge of the area with them.

I theory, cats do not like citrus-y smells, but I don't know how *I* would like rotting orange slices outside my front door! ;)

You should have a spay/neuter program in your area. They will lend you a live trap that you bait with tuna, catch a cat, take it in, they spay/neuter it, ear-notch it, then release it back out. The live traps are typically big enough -- and that cat mostly frozen in fear -- that you aren't in any real danger unless you provoke it in the small space.

If you do that, I *highly* recommend that you put the cat and cage in the bed of a truck instead of your back seat. The stress will cause the animal to urinate and you will spend a small fortune getting that smell out of your car (speaking from experience). :) Good luck!

I've used apple cider vinegar and human male urine to keep feral cats away. It's gross I know, but at least it drives the intact male cats away. I've never had a problem with female cats though, only males.
