| Re: So, who has pets other than Cat/Dog? We gave our two turtles away. We had them for 4 or 5 years, they were the size of nickel when my dad rescued them. They kept outgrowing their aquariums. The family we gave them too added them to their large outdoor ponds.
We currently have:
1 dog, Rita (lab/shepherd mix)
4 cats, Sallie, Callie, Captain & Tanille
1 rabbit, Trix
1 goat, Raz (Razzmatazz)
some fish
20+/- chickens. (only Penny & Patsy are named, and are still allowed to free-range, i don't know why, my DH only likes those two )
Our chickens use to exclusively free range, but recently DH made them a large coop and now they are eating scraps and some bought grain. The goat eats lots of scraps (cereal, breads, rice, etc) and we get her grain and hay. Our rabbit takes a while to go through his food. We are using FREE yesterday's news litter in his cage. I have 6 bags i think and it didn't work with our automatic kitty pan.

| Re: So, who has pets other than Cat/Dog? Hello. We have a couple "traditional" pets - dogs, but my babies are my parrots.
We have 4 currently - an African Grey, a Medium Sulfer Crested Cockatoo and 2 Macaws - a Blue & Gold & a Scarlett. They talk up a storm, so it is rarely quiet at our house!!
The parrots eat seads and pellets, but eat a lot of people food too. They love mixed veggies, pasta, mashed potatoes, fruit and believe-it-or-not CHICKEN!! (They almost eat better than the kids...well they do eat healthier than the kids who are teens and live on soda and junk food!!)
My husband has a reptile business, so we have lots of snakes, lizards, frogs, spiders (and mice & rats for food). Thankfully these are NOT housed at our house, but they are sometimes expensive to feed. |

| Re: So, who has pets other than Cat/Dog? I'm so surprised I've never seen this thread before! We have tons of pets, so I'm always looking for ways to save and I love to share ideas that I've come up with!
We have two dogs, a chocolate lab and a catahoula-rott mix. I buy their food from Petsmart, not much savings there, but I always try to buy when on sale. If it's cheaper at Petco, I'll buy it there. They normally get whatever treats are on sale or the ones I have coupons for. I have been noticing a lot of dog treat coupons in the Sunday inserts lately.
We have a house rabbit. Again food from Petsmart, not much savings, but we do buy a high quality food. We also use food as litter in her litter box. Although I know she eats this as well, we buy the cheaper food from the local feed store for that purpose. I think its $11 for 50 pounds. She's not big on toys, but she loves hard cardboard tubes (like big Birdie Bagels, for those who are familiar). I used to get the cores from the large rolls of paper at work and cut them for her. They last for weeks and she pushes them around, jumps over them, has a blast!
We also have a 20 gallon fish tank with 7 fish. Just a pleco and some barbs. Nothing too difficult or expensive...no real tips there.
Then we have 9 birds. We have a Greenwing Macaw (Chief), a Military Macaw (Sarge), (hence my screenname :)) a sun conure, a cockatiel, two peach-faced lovebirds, and 3 budgies. These guys could potentially cost a fortune every month in food and toys. They do eat Zupreem pellets, which are much cheaper on-line and at bird shows that at petstores. There is also a $3 rebate form that I've seen at a few places for any purchase of Zupreem food. (I may actually have a few extra if you're interested.) They eat loads of shelled nuts, which I try to buy right after the holidays when they go on sale and keep in the freezer. I've also found that the most economical thing to do is to just plant your own garden. Birds in general, but especially the big guys, love a variety of fresh foods. Last spring I was spending more money on their groceries than on mine! It's so nice to have the produce at home. I also find that the new in-the-microwave steamed veggies are really great and there are often coupons for those everywhere. I also make 90% of their toys unless I find a really good sale somewhere. I know of lots of websites that have toy parts for cheap.
As I'm sure its obvious, the animals are really my passion, so I have tons of ways that I've come up with to save here and there. If anyone is interested in hearing anymore (especially the bird stuff), just let me know. I'd be glad to help! |
