I'm not a Dominick's shopper (since I'm in Baltimore) but I have heard a lot recently about Dominick's policy of accepting expired coupons coming to an end - I was always jealous of this policy!
Apparently they updated their cash registers to scan the new style bar codes that are now appearing on coupons - the funny double bar code thing that appears to the right of the standard one. This new bar code includes information about the expiration date which the old style one never did. This is causing the new style coupons to beep at the register if they are expired and the new policy seems to be if the coupon is rejected then they won't accept it.
To complicate matters it seems that some stores are manually overriding the coupons while others are rejecting them, so YMMV! The policy does seem clear though and I think they will all stop accepting them eventually unless they get a lot of people complaining and/or boycotting them. Also causing some confusion are any coupons that do not have the new style bar code on them, these will not beep and be accepted, so it may seem to some people that the old policy is still in effect.
Over the next year or so I think all stores (everywhere) have to move to new software and read the new style bar codes, I think the manufacturers are requiring it. I am sure we will be hearing a lot more about the "extra" information stored in the new bar codes vs the old ones.
Just thought I'd pass on the info to anybody confused by Dominick's new policy.

We do a good portion of our shopping at Dominicks and our store just updated their software and posted signs stating they don't accept expired coupons - I was not happy at all but couldn't complain because I have been using expireds for a long time there. I will have to look for coupons with the old style bar code to see if they still work - thanks for the tip
