My grandmother taught me to sew - she used to sew my sister and I matching outfits when we were little. I am still learning. I use my mom's sewing machine, but would love to have one of my own.
My Grandmother taught me to sew. When I was 3 years old she would give me a large threaded needle, buttons and fabric and let me help her mend. As I grew older she taught me to make doll clothes. She taught me how to recycle clothing into stylish clothes, household items, etc. When I was in high school we spent hours recycling clothing into stylish clothes that I wore to high school. We would also make my little sister's playclothes. Later she taught me to make quilts. In 1994 I lost Grandma........I was fortunate enough to inherit her sewing machine and all her sewing treasures.

Self taught, starting at the age of 8.
I grew up with little to nothing, which means, I didn't have the fancy Barbie clothes that my friends had, so I made my own.
I would dig in the trash for old clothes that people had thrown out, I would cut them up and sew them back together in miniature for Barbie.
The only sewing my mother did was replace buttons or hem pants.
As I got older I would buy magazines and patterns and read, read, and reread, and practice.
A neighbor gave my mother a machine when I was 16, and things just blossomed from there. By the time I got married and had my first child at 22, I was making quilts as well as her clothes.
I am now 46 and have made everything from Halloween costumes to diapers and prom gowns. I even did a complete wedding one time. Wedding gown, bridesmaid dresses 12, flower girls 5, ring bearers 3, my dress, my sister-in-law. I even did the guys ties and cumberbunds.
I only sew a couple of times a year now, due to carpel tunnel surgery on both hands. But I still love it, and will not give my machines away, unless of course I buy new ones.![]()
my mom...I had strep alot (before effective antibiotics) and one year I was out of school alot (before tonsils removed, then no problems) and since I was home so much, she taught me to sew. I am very gratefull for that. My sisters never learned how. I can fix just about anything, although I would rather buy a new thing than replace a zipper
