Fred's Discount Store ~ Q for more than item

I found the Glade Scented oil thingys at Freds for $3.99 and some other varieties for $2.xx. (my heart skipped a beat thinkin about overage)
I picked up a $3.99 one and took my $4 q to the register and asked. The cashier got the MOD and I thought her head was going to spin....she said there is no way they can take that q. I explained that some stores adjust it down, she said No Way, that can be a right thing to do.....
Does anyone know if they should've taken it.
