Do you take anything for anxiety? If so, what and how effective do you find it to be?

No, I don't take anything for my severe anxiety - I practice control over my own mind and watching my blood sugar to get past it. This is because I feel very strongly about not taking prescription medicine if at all possible. I haven't had an attack in a very long time, and when I start to feel one coming on, I handle it before it gets too bad.

I hope you find the answers you are looking for, Dog :)

Xanax-my prescription is .5 MG, which I break in half and take .25 at a time.
I have heard it is addicting, but I have had no problem only taking it when needed.

I have taken paxil and prozac. They were both equally effective to me...but they seem to make my overall mood just duller. So I don't take them anymore. I also took xanax a few times for severe anxiety.

I don't like taking meds so I am in therapy now. It is helping more than the meds IMO because it is teaching me how to control it before I need to take meds. It's like mellie mentioned...you can learn how to control your thinking.

I take prozac. Without it I am irritable and lots of little things people do bother me(even strangers). I get real critical of others, which is really NOT my personality. Oh yeah and I almost forgot,if I dont take it I forget EVERYTHING!

Xanax. It can be addictive if you let it be but like Lori I take when I need to not just because I need to pop a pill. I have serious anxiety issues because I stress about things too much. Such is my life.
I had sanity once upon a time I promise . It was just so long agoooo that I can't remember it.

I am not sure what the "real" meds are, but my husband takes Citalopram "generic" for anxiety. It works wonders for him. He used to be very outgoing, could talk in front of groups, etc...His youngest son passed away, and probably a month later, he found he couldn't talk in front of large groups without having panic attacks. He would break out in a cold sweat, get tongue tied, and would almost hyperventilate. He went to the dr's and was told he had a mild form of depression and anxiety and was perscribed this medication. It was the full fledge medication, but ultimately went to the generic form which is the Citalopram. Almost within a week his symptoms dissipated and he was back to his normal self. He could speak in front of large groups again, etc. He has been on it for about 3 - 4 years now and just went to the doctors to see about weaning him off it.
