    Default Diabetes

With so many diabetes sufferers out there, I thought I'd start a thread.

My Aunt lives in another state and just frantically called my Mom because she did not have enough money to pay for her syringes. I just Western Union'd her $50. Gold star for me! :Angel9: Anyway, I know very little about Diabetes and am wondering if there's somewhere that she can get her supplies cheaper for the future. I know CVS constantly gives away the monitors, but other than that, I'm clueless. My Aunt is over 65 and on medicare/medicaid (not sure which one) and has VERY little income (just social security).

    Suggestions? Thanks!! :Butterfly:

Both medicaid and medicare should cover diabetic supplies - she should check with her MD and get a perscription for her supplies.

My whole family is diabetic {except me thankfully!}, and was taught this by a MD years ago for diabetic ulcers.

Soak the ulcer in epsom salts soak, pat dry, peroxide out the ulcer liberally, then without drying it, pack it full of regular sugar & cover with a dressing. Repeat several times daily.

Yes, I know this seems odd - but I have seen it work. Basically the MD told us that the sugar makes the ulcer TOO sweet for bacteria to live. My mother went from gangreen in her foot {ready to amputate it}, to healed in less than a month with this.

    Hi,

I'm diabetic and on Medicare/Medicaid(can never remember which)

Recently your Aunt should have had to pick out another insurance plan through Medicare/Medicaid that would help pay for perscriptions and such.

My syringes cost me $3.00 with a perscription as does my insulin. The cost of my diabetes testing supplies(test strips, meters, lancets) is free. I can't garuantee it would be the same for your Aunt.

Please have her talk to her Doctor or call Social Sercurity to make sure she is getting what she is entitled to, so many of the elderly fall through the cracks when left to figure these things out on their own.

OMG! I know. I can't believe the hoops they make people jump through. My Mom can barely operate her answering machine (technolgy is NOT her forte) so navigating her insurance was an impossibility for her. Even making an doctor's appointment when it's a phone bank to navigate is hard for her. Will talk to my Aunt (she doesn't have kids to help her with this) weekend and see what's up with her insurance. Thanks for the heads up on the coverage and general expenses!!

Yes, my sister and I both tried to work out my parents for the change over to D last year...both are diabetics. It seems odd to me, but it didn't even occur to the doctor that they might need help covering costs or figuring things out!

There are quite a few coupons/offers on diabetic supplies, but under Medicare they should be covered (and not eligible for other offers, as I recall). I think I have a link...let me check...

Well, of course they have changed the site...

Of the publications that explain things, maybe

    http://www.medicare.gov/Publications...English#TabTop

    or the home page

    www.medicare.gov

actually has good info if you can navigate through it.
