    Default Question - Can Ear Gauging Cause Cellulitis?

    A relative of mine has cellulitis on her ear - she had to skip school today because of the pain and is now in the emergency room and says they have to do some type of surgery. A few weeks ago she posted on facebook that she was "gauging" her ears and I was wondering if that could have caused the cellulitis.

    Cellulitus can happen anywhere....but it sure likes open wounds!

    It could definitely be. All it takes is a break in the skin to let bacteria in, so a fresh piercing could definitely be the culprit. And even f she started gauging an already healed pierced ear, when she tried to increase the gauge she could have stretched the skin too much and caused a break in it.
