You can go to a place like Walmart and ask them to measure your "pupillary distance" (the distance between your pupils) or there are blogs that explain how to do this. I've done it myself and it's pretty easy.

When you enter in your prescription, you select your PD.

When I got my first pair of glasses they gave me headaches. I had to break them in by wearing them for maybe 2 hours at a time. Eventually I got to where they were fine. I didn't wear them all the time though. Just for driving.

Now I have two problems. My nearsightedness has gotten so bad I need the glasses not only for driving but daily living. But... I can't read with them on. Like you I have astigmatism. I tried reading glasses but they didn't work for me.

If I were you I would go back to the eye Dr. Could be they gave you the wrong prescription or your eyes have changed. I did go to one very bad Dr. in CA. I took the glasses back because I literally couldn't see with them. She insisted that I had to have them. Said she would change the lenses. Long story short she gave me one plain glass lens and one that had slight magnification. Neither one was right for my eyes.

I don't have vision insurance so are the ophthalmologists more expensive? Or any chance my health insurance covers them?
I don't have vision insurance either but my insurance will cover eye exams and exams for things like an eye infection.

I don't think one costs any more than the other.

I'm going to wade in here and first say I hope by this time you've gotten some relief. I used to work at an eyeglass place in collage. Not making glasses, just fitting them onto the customer by bending the arms, which arrived straight.

If your glasses are giving you headaches, there could be a variety of issues. As some have mentioned, you may have gotten the wrong prescription, or possibly the prescription was read incorrectly due to poor handwriting or whatever and thus ground incorrectly. It is also possible the glasses are ill-fitted to your head. If your glasses are too narrow and pinch your head, or fitted in such a way as to pinch behind your ears, it is possible they might cause you pain. You may also simply not wear your lenses quite as they were measured. When you ordered your lenses, they should have had you look straight into a small device at a light. This device measures where your eyes sit in your head so that when they grind you lenses, they grind the focal point in the right place. This is often done by a store person who is only moderately trained, so they may have got the measurement slightly off, but the measurement is mostly in the machine. The thing is, it is generally set up assuming you will always wear the glasses pushed as far up your nose right against your face as possible. Lots of people, particularly those with oily skin or a bumped or large nose, may prefer to have their glasses sit slightly lower on the bridge of the nose. If this is you, then you need them to measure for that instead. If they did not, the problem is the glasses have been ground expecting your eyes to sit behind them in a certain fashion. They way they've been ground will cause your eyes to sort of feel pulled. If you find the store clerk argues you are at fault for not wearing the glasses properly, ask for someone else to help you. The clerk probably just doesn't know how to do any resetting of the equipment for measuring, but a knowledgeable person properly trained in the setup of the equipment can do this. If no one in the store knows how, have them get the person who grinds the lenses on the phone, as they should know how to handle this.

My DH has oily skin and if his glasses get smudged, he gets migraines. Thus he habitually wears his glasses just the smallest amount slid down his nose. He has had to go round several times with eye glass places who swore it wasn't them, he was at fault for his glasses simply not properly correcting his nearsightedness.

As to the person that mentioned astigmatism, if your eye doctor and eye glass maker (Not an optician, the person who actually grinds the lenses) cannot make lenses which correct your astigmatism 100%, you should find a different place to be treated. According to the doctor and the person who ground the lenses where I worked, it is possible it might be impossible to 100% correct astigmatism with contacts, but there should never be a reason things couldn't be 100% corrected with proper grinding of lenses.

This might sound silly...or it might sound too personal. But has your nose ever been broken? Here's why I ask. Mine has...twice (first marriage, long story). Because of this, I can't wear glasses at all. The slightest pressure on my nose causes me to have horrible headaches! No glasses...no sunglasses. I do wear contacts, but I wish sometimes that I had a choice.

Just ow! I've had a broken nose - no real drama involved, just one of those accidents that sometimes happen. I did not realize how grateful I should be I have no discernible problems other than a smallish bump left as a reminder. Sorry to hear you suffer this issue and I hope perhaps it will improve with time for you.

Just in case your ophthalmologist didn't mention it; they make contacts for astigmatism too.
