With schools getting out and the official first day of summer coming soon - I want to remind everyone to remember the sunscreen. Skin cancer is a fairly common disease these days, but you can help prevent skin cancer by using sunscreen.

But the catch is - you have to use it correctly.

Make sure you read the label of your sunscreen for directions - each brand may be a little different.

One of the most common mistakes, one that I used to make all the time, is not putting sunscreen on soon enough. You need to put it on about 20-30 minutes BEFORE going into the sun. And make sure you re-apply every time you come out of the water, even when using a waterproof sunscreen. And don't forget to reapply every two hours through out the day if you continue to be in the sun.

Also, pay attention to swimwear. There is specially made swimwear that will protect your skin from the sun. Not all swimwear or other clothing will protect yourself or your child from the sun. I normally by my daughter a "rashguard" type swimsuit. These are suits that are made like a t-shirt. This covers more of her skin with spf protection.

And don't forget your pooch! Some dog breeds are vulnerable to the sun. There are several varieties of sunscreen made just for dogs. Ask your vet if you should be putting sunscreen on your dog.

Make sure you check your store forums for deals on sunscreen!!
